Hello, I have a question about the upcoming PC killing games, and upgrading!

This is my system:

1600 xp AMD (coolermaster low noise)
ECS K7S54 1.0 (sound onboard)
Dane-elec 512 pc 2700
Gforce 4 TI 4200 pof (3,3 ns 64 MB ram) @ 297/585
WD 800JB 80 Gb (7200/100-8Mb)
16/48 LG DVD rom
48/24/48 lite-on CD'r
100Mbit realteck fast ethernet
(case 350 W power + 2 case Fan's)

OS: winXP pro + SP1

I want to play games like: doom3, Half-life 2 do I need to upgrade? What?
I am thinking of buying a new mobo and a processor.
I like AMD and video: ATI ore, NVIDIA
Any suggestions, tips? My budget is 300 ? / 350 $

Thank you for any comment, suggestion, and advice.

In short -

An AMD with a 333 FSB (2500+ Bartons are selling around 120 dollars) with at least a 9500 pro for eye candy.
For a lot smoother framerate:
9700 pro or non pro, FX5900 Ultra, or even the 9800 non pro/pro.

The GF4 will do good with the filters off but as soon as you flip the Anisotropic filtering or aliasing it's toast.

I'm just speculating on what I hear.

XP 2400+, use same mobo, 9700 np.

Should be some money left over for inexpensive sound card and 4.1 speakers.

I agree with tenoc. An XP 2400+ should work on your MB, and it'll provide a nice boost for $75-85. A 9700 (non-Pro) is the best price/performance card at ~$200.

But I'd wait until those future games (like Doom 3 and HL2) are released before upgrading. If you don't feel the need to upgrade now, don't, and you'll know exactly what you need when those games are released. If you do, the above suggestions should provide a nice framerate boost now, and offer good longevity for the price.
