Its election year and so it season to spend some $ on some new gear. I ordered up some gear, and wanted to get feed back installing. Want to play a few games and screw around, I dont need to run the world. But it would be nice.

I'm at a crossroads and haven't worked on pcs for a while now. So like the elections, I figured I would get your vote, but I would do it different, I would ask the people.

So you Decide..

Here is what I am running today..

PROCESSOR
P4 2.53 running at 2.66 OC
* Is there a testing system to check the stability of an over clock. 1st time seem to be running well though.

MOTHER BOARD
VIA P4PB 400, 533 MHz FSB
478 Socket

RECENT UPGRADES
Just Ordered Parts Today - Will it work and is it worth it?
512 2700 DDR - Today Ordered 2 Gig DDR400 3200
* Have heard that the 3200 ran unstable in this board?

NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 128 - Today Ordered ATI Radon x1950Pro 256 agp 8x
* Worried about the 8x running on this board? I've seen conflicting information. Anyone know?

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Upgrade Processor, motherboard or Do you think that the Video Card and Ram should do the trick?

After a bit more research.. You can get a upto a P4 3.4 Ghz 800 MHz Bus, a bit over 200$

I am going to wait on this piece until I get some feed back. Dont want to spend the money if I really wont get much out or dont have, who does.

However, I consider worse situation give this pc to the wife and I can buy a new toy (c:

The mother board is the Via p4p4 400fl.

I know its outdated, but come on. I just bought it when I was in college. Oh damn, that was like 4 years ago. lol
I love computers. (c:

- But If I want to squeeze another year or so and still play a few games and screw around, what do you think it would take?

It's not worth upgrading. Return the parts you just bought for it, and get a new PC.

Newer memory is cheaper than old. Same with a video card; you could get something newer, cheaper, and a lot faster than what you got if you had a motherboard with a PCI Express x16 slot.

It's even worse for the processor. That upgrade is only going to get you 20% performance improvement. For the same money a newer CPU could get you four to eight times the performance.

But I dont want to spend more than 400$, that the problem. So what would you upgrade on it? or pick up for around $400.

Well lets see...

E2160 - $70
P35 MB - $80
2*1GB PC6400 - $35

that leaves $185 for the video card. That's enough for a 9600GT with money to spare or a 8800GT which might put you just above your budget. Prices are approximate.

I must totally agree. I have the same cpu and rather than upgrading that platform, I purchased new and just put the old, outdated, slower and hotter 478 to rest.

Trash the old system, or ebay it. It's a no-brainer.

Don't forget you'll probably need a new psu if you want a new video card in the league you're talking about here. Don't skimp on the psu -- make sure you get quality. Not just something that claims to have 500W. Go ask in the psu forums.

Alright, I'm hard head and don't like to throw my trust friend away, but alas she must go. So I'm reading up and considering loosly $700 bucks or so.

Just started to research and considering E8400 or QX6700 but not sure which is better? I saw that the price dropped on the qx6700 quite a bit.

A good video card that is not crazy priced but solid.

So what do you think we could get in for around 400-700 reasonably?

Martiumus that spreadsheet of yours rocks! If your reading this post make sure to take a look.

So here is the question... Would you pay the less than 50$ more to get the q6600?

Would I get a Q6600 instead of a E8400? I may, I don't know. The E8400 clocks very high, with many people getting over 4GHz (although I would just run it at 3.6GHz, and run the FSB at 400MHz if I got one), while the Q6600 doesn't clock quite as high. At the same time, the Q6600 has two more cores and will overclock pretty well in its own right. Between the two, I would probably go with the Q6600 and try to run it at least at 3GHz (9x333) and hope to get it up to 3.2GHz (8x400). If you are asking if the Q6700 is worth the extra monry, I say no because it isn't the FSB that is holding the chip back, it is usually the chip frequency that holds it back; this means that the higher multiplier isn't really going to help you when overclocking the processor.
