Upgrade to XP from Win2K is it worth the trouble?

Hey guys,

I've been running WIn2k for the last 8 months with no problems. I of course want the latest and greatest and have been tempted to do a clean install of XP and reinstalling all my apps.

Is XP reliable enough now that it has been out for a while? I am paranoid that my optical drives will not work with XP but I'm not sure how I can make sure everything I have is compatible.

Or should I not even open can of worms and just work with Win2K?

thoughts and insights?

thanks!

Soyo Dragon Plus
AMD XP 1800

Windows XP is built on the 2000 platform with more bells and whistles basically. XP will require a little more performance from your system to run compared to 2000 but some of the extra features are nice. All of your hardware will work fine if it works in 2000.

The consensus is to go with XP Professional over the home version due to lack of current and future features.

It's well worth the trouble... in fact it's not even a trouble!!! I had more troubles with W2K than with the upgrade or after it!

I prefer Win2K over XP. Just as good without all the "Teletubby" bloat. Just my opinion.

I kinda bounce back in forth between having win2k installed and winXP. Right now I've got 2k on my desktop. 2k's always going on my laptop because for some reason Wireless Networking is kinda flakey on my laptop in XP. Works in other peoples with the same card...works in 2k...ah well...

Don't know what I'm going to put on my desktop when win2k Dies. I might just wait for XP Service Pack 2...since SP1 actually caused my winXP install to become unstable :) (fresh install btw). We'll see.

I ran XP Pro for 6 months. I have now gone back to Win2000. Performance wise I never saw a great difference. My hard drive ran somewhat slower under XP (had a scsi), but that was a problem that may have been fixed with SP1. What really ticked me off with XP is when I ran into some file corruption, (a hardware fault not XP's), but my "user profile" became corrupted, and XP wouldn't let me in to fix it. I could get in to the desktop, but not do anything. It had to do with XP's "activation" system. It lost that info with the file corruption, and hence XP assumed I was running a non-activated install. I never had any problems like that fixing my Win2000 install if problems arose.

Going from 2k to XP was NOT that great of a leap into the future?

XP is very feature rich. It is an excellent interface?.

Unfortunately, XP is buggy? VERY buggy. There are a lot of things that work on Windows 2000 that DOES NOT work on XP or Breaks... (don?t even make me make a list)

Some games will crash running XP which will run fine on 2K.

IMHO, I think XP is a catch 22.

Some people get lucky and have ZERO Problems? others have more than they can bare.

I had to downgrade my work computer back to 2000 because of all the problems. At home, I?m a bit luckier and still running XP.

It?s a gamble you have to be willing to take.

Many games RUN on XP which will not run @ all on 2k.

1) Legacy DOS games like Total Annhilation (best RTS of all time)
2) Has anyone ever tried getting 'force feedback' to work in Win2k?
3) How about A3D sound in Win 2k?

I'm using W2k since Jan 2001 without any major problems on my 2 rigs, my sister has XP Home Edition on her notebook and every now and again I have to repair the instalation, reformat/reinstall, etc.
And the only 2 programs she uses are Windows Media Player and Excel, so XisPe (pig's feet in portuguese, it's written chispe but since ch is read like x) will never be installed on my rigs.

I wouldn't do it with a free upgrade, and certainly not with what it actually costs.

So many negative posts about XP lol... Bottom line?

When you get tired of paying to be a beta tester for Microsoft's Win2K....start paying to be a beta tester for Microsofts's WinXP. What's hard to figure out?

Well, for me it made sense as I made a lot of upgrades to my system recently optimized for XP. I don't upgrade right away, I let the rest of you Beta test for a while b4 I make a move ;) Anyway, it was good timing, lots of upgrades, new 80gb 8mb cache Maxtor screaming for a fresh OS install, and I was at the point where it was easier finding support and optimized drivers for XP than 2000.

I have seen quite a few improvements beyond XP's GUI. My Audigy 2 doesn't randomly pop anymore, although I think this was a result of not being able to totally remove my Live! drivers (and another reason why I needed a fresh install). My Asus TV 880 Tuner card IQ looks better in XP and the software seems to run faster/smoother as well. Reboots take 1/4 the time (may be a combo of the new HDD and XP though), which certainly makes installing new hardware/drivers less cumbersome. I couldn't get MW4:Mercs to run in 2000, runs great in XP. Also haven't had any issues at all with existing games, where I would get random crashes and .dll errors in Win2k. Other than that, I've found them to be nearly identical in performance/support for software and hardware, but XP is just laid out so much nicer. The GUI improvements alone have made the switch worthwhile for me as I do a lot of multi-tasking. My LCD looks better with less grey level tracing (which also translates into better DVD playback). Overrall very happy with XP, but yah, doesn't mean I'm going to go install it on my P3 media server.
