Would upgrading a computer (a p3 733 w/ 256 pc100 ram, geforce 256 card, 7200rpm Maxtor HD) with win98se to win2k so that more ram could be added (up to 512 or 768) make any noticeable difference in anything the computer does. Money is sort of an issue as win2k would cost 100 bucks at least and the ram would be more, so if it wont be a decent increase i'd like to know. Thanks.

I thought win2k was free...

It depends what you do. If you do BIG Photoshop stuff, yes it will matter. If you do heavy DIVX encoding, yes it would. If you want to leave your computer on 24/7/365 with no reboots, yes it would. But if you play counter strike and quake3, and turn off your computer every 12 hours, not a big difference.

First just try win2k and 256 ram. I like that much better than win98 ANY amount of ram. Then if you see yourself maxing out the ram (like I did) upgrade to 512.

I could tell you, but then I would have to call the microsoft anti-piracy line on you.

i dont have a friend with win2k (or maybe i do and he's holding out on me). But i've been talking to a bunch of my friends, we're all poor highschool kids, and all of us are stuck on win98 and one of my friends is on win95 cause he's retarded or something. So a copy would still have to be purchase to be distributed among us. And of course we would fully alert microsoft to every copy installed so that the proper billing could take place.

i'll look around. My parents, no, they wont really understand when i try to explain it to them. Their email and yahoo portfolios work fine right now, so they don't want me messing with anything. Thats why any hardware/software upgrades i jsut do without telling them anymore if i can.

Hi, Poncherelli.

I'm an old fart, so just ignore me if you wish. But I'd say that it isn't a particularly good idea to be considering the commission of larceny because you're not satisfied with your OS. (Nor is it a particularly good idea for others here to encourage you in this.) Courts are just kicking the living crap out of kids these days. Seems like everyone wants to try a kid as an adult, and the juvenile proceedings are probably bad enough. No, Microsoft isn't about to send you to jail. But the local, state and federal law enforcement authorities have been known to confiscate computers and software from kids and their familiies over issues such as software piracy.

I'd also point out that it's probably your folks who paid for that computer, right? And their stuff is working, right? And they're probably not going to pat you on the head if everything stops working -- at least not if they connect the functional failure to you. Give them a little credit. They may not be quite as stupid as you think. In the interests of familial harmony, perhaps the wise course of action is to wait until you can experiment with your very own computer -- either that or get permission.

There you are, $.02 from the ancient idiot burial grounds.

Regards,
Jim

Exactly - people using pirated software are all having confiscated there computers. It's highly risky. That's why nobody does warez, after all.

How do you figure that? I had WinME, loved it. Everybody said Win2K was so much better so I upgraded to that. I didn't like it as much so I went to Win98SE. This is by far the best OS I've ever used. I can't see how people put it down, to each his own I guess:D Good luck with finding an OS.

AMDPwred - I like having my computer stay stable on me.. I like havnig my computer run for 6 months without rebooting.. I like to be able to take advantage of more ram.. I like an OS that natively supports all of my hardware... Don't you?

Exactly - the risk of being caught is the only reason for obeying the law. If there's no risk of being caught, why go ahead and do anything you please. Of course, if a bunch of teenagers get together and agree to share a single license, and if they're dumb enough to talk about it or post on public forums about it -- well, maybe the chances of getting caught are a little higher.

Heck, you don't even have to committ piracy. People have been sued for making "libelous statements" about companies in chat rooms. And the chat room hosts (Yahoo in at least one case) were forced to release records that linked the "anonymous" users to their words. So, Moonbender, your sarcasm sort of misses the mark. I'm just counseling caution, not being judgmental.
