so i was reading a DailyTech article about how you can use a Vista upgrade disc to install it even if you're not upgrading.

*I CURRENTLY RUN XP so it would be an upgrade*

so, that got me to the thought of upgrading. i'm a college student, so i get a ridiculous discount on software (vista is one)... vista ultimate for $30? seems tempting to me. but then again, XP runs everything i want, and windows7 is going to come in a few years anyway... is it worth it?

poll included :p

The good thing is, you can even do a fresh install with a Vista upgrade disk!

For $30 I'd get it even if I didn't like it. It's worth that much for the education in using it. As it is, Vista is my favorite O/S to date, and I wouldn't wait a minute to jump on that offer.

You know what...

I've *thought* about this a L-O-N-G time!

Based on the price break that OEMs give you for buying a new machine without an OS installed, assorted student discount rates, the price of Windows licenses in turd world countries, yada, yada, yada...

I truly believe $30-ish is a FAIR price for Microsoft Windows, et al.

In a perfect world, that's the price they would be charging everyone, across the board!

So, by all means, yes - go for it!

It's only fair... :D

Heh!

I *suspect* the OP is just gloating - has every intention of buying it - would be a fool not to, however...

I wanted to comment on "my favorite O/S to date" (in order):
  • Windows Vista HP (multimedia lappys)
    Windows 2000 Pro (daily drivers/LAN)
    Windows 98SE (proxy server/doorstops)
I still use all three, for different purposes, and they all should have been $30, IMHO! :)

no i have no intention of gloating that i can get it for cheap. if i wanted to do that, i'd make a thread titled "damn i can get vista for cheap"

i'm curious as to whether it's *worth* getting considering i currently can do everything on XP that i would with vista, and windows7 will be released in the relatively near future. so far i haven't seen any huge incentive to switch over just yet.

Do you have imaging software, so you can image your XP drive, install Vista, keep it if you like or go back to Xp if you don't? looking at your rig specs, you have a 1.8 Ghz Core2 CPU, right. Also the ATI X850 XT is not the newest screamer (but still DirectX 9).

This should upgrade alright, but having the backup image would make me more comfortable.
