Upgrade to intel or no?

Currently running a 6400+ Black, 4gb ram and 8800gt in SLI. Looking to upgrade my system so thought about doing a 680i board, e8400 and Tuniq tower. Would I see an improvement without overclocking the intel and after ocing it?

Not much if any of an increase before OC and maybe a bit faster in gaming (I can't see the difference being too big though) after OCing.

For encoding the OC'd intel would be a fair bit faster if you do that but for just gaming not much of a difference as the vid card is most important.

Some people would say so, the E8400 is pretty darn fast to begin with, so overclocking probably won't even be necessary for most of the stuff you'll run on the average system. 680i is known for lots of bugs and prone to overheating at times, 750i is a pretty nice way to go unless you want Tri-SLI which limits you to the 780i/790i.

Q6600 would show a slight speed increase since it is stock clocked lower, however most games can't utilize 2 cores, let alone 4. The E8400 is a good way to go if you're a gamer, if you do lots of cpu heavy apps like encoding, folding, etc. then the Q6600, either one is a good choice.

How long is your usual upgrade cycle? And what do you use your computer for the most?

Right now games very rarely use 4 cores, and unless you get a good cooler and overclock it a bunch your 3.2 ghz AMD will beat the 2.4 ghz q6600 in I think all games, maybe the q6600 will beat it in supcom. Ergo the e8400 is a better choice if you just game and you upgrade on a somewhat frequent basis.

And I agree with krnmastersgt, the 680i isn't a good choice for a new build today. The EVGA 750i FTW I have only heard good things about and is a decent price for an SLI mobo.

Got a 680i already brand new evga for $110. Will upgrade again in December. Have had the 6400+ for about 3 months.

Then I would recommend an e8400 and then probably a nehalem will be the best thing out in December for you.

Hopefully it's out by then, but Nehalem is a new micro-architecture and is going to be released in several variants (the number of pins is going to differ from what I hear). If you can return that board Caramanos the 750i FTW is about $40 more and is a lot better at overclocking, less bugs and heat issues, and imho looks a lot better.

Oh also make sure the BIOS on your board is capable of supporting a Penryn cpu, otherwise you'll need a BIOS flash.

Ya, nehalem will definitely be a different socket, and will only will use DDR-3 as far as I know.

And I agree, if you can exchange the 680i for the 750i it would be a good decision, and it adds 45nm quad core support which you might want down the road perhaps.

For the e8400 the 680i isn't a terrible mobo, you'll probably be quite happy with it, its quite feature rich.

Desktop Nehalems isn't out till Q1 09, and I doubt it will improve gaming much over C2D.

About the nehelams probably not improving gaming much, I agree. But he wants to upgrade in December anyways so why not skip the quad now and get a nehalem quad with HT then?

But probably just the expensive extreme will be out at that time, who knows.

since you re gona upgrade soon why not just grab the e7200 and save money? it has half the cache, wont OC nearly as high but its less than half the price.

Actually, the E7200 is well over half the price of an E8400, and overclocks just as high. It's definitely the best deal in CPU's right now, if you don't need a quad.

oh right, its a bit over half the price, my bad. i still think the e8400 will oc a bit better though and with lower voltages:

Xbit labs and legitreviews needed quite a bit of voltage to get to or near 4ghz, and techgage could not get to 4ghz while a lot of e8400's i have seen would do 4ghz with around 1.4v (altho that seems like a high voltage to me anyways)

For gaming only you should save your money right now ... unless you run at low resolutions you''ll see very little performance increase upgrading your CPU.

First person who's shown some sense here.

You have a fast cpu already, you will see much better return for your cash by upgrading your video cards. Wait about a month and the 4870 should be out and sometime soon the GT200 series is supposed to launch. These are expected to blow away the current generation cards.

Where can we find out bout those new versions of cards? and when is PCI-X gonna be introduced fully into the market? and im looking at getting a 2nd hand 8800 GT Chaintk from a buddy at 30% of the retail price, R1000 which is like $80 or whatever, is this a good move as im stuck with a piece of poo 8600 GTS 256Mb taking into account the new releases coming soon?
