My Smart UPS 1400's fan just failed probably two days ago...we noticed a smell of burning plastic in the room but could not pinpoint it until about 10 mins ago when I rested my foot on the UPS unit and it was HOT!.

I am thinking these are robust units so there probably wasn't any thermal issues, but my batteries are also due for replacement.

I replaced my fan already once, and it's not a big deal nor expensive; but I live in S. Florida and we get blackouts during hurricane season. I am running a PC (AMD 955 with 4790 in it), a 24" LCD, my answering machine, a USB Printer, my external backup drive and that's about it.

I am looking at a floor mount unit, nothing rack mounted. Targeting $200 or less and ebay / CL are definite options. I picked up my 1400 nearly brand new several years ago for under $100 from a guy that scored a company with tons of spares on the shelves he bought by the pound (minus the batteries) for.

If there is not a great upgrade I will just replace the fan and batteries again.
