Here is my system:

i7-4930k
32GB DDR3-1600
GTX 780 Ti
2TB SSD

I recently returned a GTX 1080 Founder's Edition and got a refund on it due to an issue I was having with it and no more were in stock. In a few days I will be able to afford a GTX Titan X. I prefer single card configurations over SLI. However, if I get a GTX Titan X in a few days from now, I won't be able to afford upgrade to a i7-7700k, new motherboard, DDR4 until next month. Am I better off upgrading to a GTX Titan X in a few days from now and next month upgrade to a i7-7700k system? Am I better of buying a GTX 1080 (aftermarket) such as an MSI Gaming X or and Asus Strix OC and upgrading to a i7-7700k system this month?

Are you paycheck to paycheck or something? If there is an issue affording something like a Titan X... it is not in your ball park.

In a few days I will have the money for the Titan X (Pascal). Yes I'm paycheck to paycheck. For me, getting a GTX Titan (Pascal) instead of a GTX 1080 mean saving up one more month, and I got refunded on the GTX 1080 I returned. I just have to wait when my current credit card billing cycle ends which is in a few days from now and make sure the refund on the GTX 1080 posts to my credit card. If I buy right now, instead of waiting a few days when next my credit card billing cycle begins, then I can only afford a GTX 1080.

What resolution are you running at?

The 1080 is great for 1440p while the titan will be more for 4k really right now.

I suppose you could always wait 4-5 months for vega and see if the 1080 ti is released then if you have a g-sync monitor or price drops on the other two.

I would wait for vega/1080ti possibilities if possible. Also, if you have not already, OC the 4930k and that will help; should not need to upgrade the CPU.

I wouldn't spend the money on a Titan X no matter what. Get the 1080 if you are ready go play games now or wait a few months to see if Vega is competitive and does anything to current prices.

Why are you wanting to buy a 1080 or Titan XP? Is there a use case where you need it or just because it'd be cool to have one?

I don't get this. The man has a 780Ti that is long in the tooth. He wants a real upgrade. 1080 or TXP make sense from that perspective. Why insinuate buying either is just a vanity move? Take off the red glasses once in a while.

Guess you missed my other post where I asked him more details on why he was upgrading?

He is living paycheck to paycheck yet wants a $1200 GPU.

No where did I say buy AMD. I'm trying to figure out why he wants to upgrade from a 780 ti to a $1200 Titan XP and how to do it without making his budget go nuts and him to max out his CCs.

A GTX 1070 would also be a real upgrade. What are you trying to insinuate?

OP, how would you feel if you bought the Titan XP, then Nvidia released the 1080Ti in the next 2 months which will be faster, OC better, and have better coolers? As well as costing less by a SIGNIFICANT margin. If you're ok with that.... well ok. But otherwise, I suggest you take the Titan XP off the table. Even the 1080 really. Would you be happy with a 1080 knowing the price be cut within 2 months and a far faster GPU will be out for a miniscule amount more money? If so, then... ok. Otherwise, I'd just get your hardware upgrades that aren't GPU related first. Then wait next month and see what the rumors are on the 1080Ti.
Then get a 1080Ti.

Can't recommend you anything else OP given your situation, I've got a longer explanation incoming as well OP, but you're paycheck to paycheck.... (whatever that means), The Titan XP and 1080 are just bad value cards. It's either the 1070, or the 1080Ti. And if you bought a 780Ti living paycheck to paycheck (I'm guessing that hasn't changed), then I don't think you're scared of spending the money, might as well get the BEST one and get the 1080Ti. If you don't think there will be a repeat of the excellence of the 980Ti well.... ok :(

I can't stress enough how poor of a value the 1080 and Titan XP are with the 1080Ti RIGHT around the corner that will influence the pricing and value of both HEAVILY.

OP, if you have to ask others how to spend your money then I suggest you not spend it. If you need or want the highest performance available and aren't concerned with the money then a 1080 or TXP are just fine. This board is a $/FPS board and they don't take into consideration someone wanting high performance and price be damned.

Honestly I wouldn't expect you to tell him to buy AMD because AMD doesn't have anything in the performance category of what he is looking at.

once again people are giving advice without even knowing what his resolution is.????!!!!
Dave 3000.....
I'm going to give you some general recommendations.

if your monitor is 1080p 1920x1080 buy a gtx1070
if your monitor is 1440p grab a gtx1080
for 4k grab a Titan XP

Don't upgrade your cpu unless after you upgrade your gpu your not happy with your performance.

SOme might say wait 5 months for the Vega or gtx1080ti.
When they are released I'm sure there will be price gouging, so you will need to wait another month. That's like 6 months.
I say just buy what you want now, if you can afford it.
If you can afford a gtx780ti, i'm sure you can afford any gpu you want.

edit:
I can see by your system specs you like the finer things in life and can afford them, I say go for it.

Waiting for 1080Ti makes more sense, or maybe a discounted 1080. Titan X was most valuable last August, now its a much lower value proposition.

Kind of funny to see how recommendations have progressed.

"Don't buy a 1080, the prices are too high above MSRP, wait for them to come closer to MSRP."

*months pass, 1080s come down close to, if not to, MSRP*

"Don't buy a 1080, wait for 1080 Ti/Vega, they might cause 1080 prices to go down!"

When 1080 Ti comes out, it will be "wait for Vega" and then when Vega is out, we might even start hearing "Wait for Volta" or even "Wait for Navi."

At some point you just gotta buy, otherwise you aren't going to be playing modern games at good image quality/resolution settings. A 1080 is a solid upgrade from the aging 780 Ti. A very solid upgrade.

1080 is a fine value, I doubt its price will come down in the near-term. Titan XP might prove a poor value if 1080 Ti is very close for much less money, but we don't really know what it's going to be priced at or how extensively it will be cut down relative to the XP.

I can afford a Titan X (Pascal) in a few days. I will be able to pay off my credit card in full this month if I don't spend the money on it for this billing cycle and just wait a few days for the start of the next billing cycle. Me buying it won't max out my credit card as someone here mentioned and I will still be able to pay my credit card in full. However, if a GTX 1080Ti will be released in a few months from now, I might hold off on the video card upgrade and wait for that. Instead of a video card upgrade, Maybe I will upgrade to an i7-7700k system in a few days, and wait a few months to see what happens in terms of video cards coming out if we are that close to the next release of video cards.

I approve the 7700K upgrade. You will probably be able to get pretty much a 7700K's worth back when you resell the 4930K and amazingly enough, X79 boards have held up their value quite nicely (save the backplate for when you go to sell).

No need to be on the ancient X79 platform when you can be on Z270 and get much better gaming performance to boot.

As far as Titan X Pascal, honestly, I've got one, it's SWEET and if you really want to play the latest games now at 4K or 2560x1440 @ 144hz, you can't go wrong. But if a 1080 won't do it for you (are you sure it won't?) then waiting for the 1080 Ti isn't a terrible idea if your gaming PC isn't your main/only hobby and you're going to want to spend your $ on other stuff.

But if a 1080 will do it for you, check this out: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...4125936&cm_re=gtx_1080-_-14-125-936-_-Product

$570 for a totally tricked out 1080 with a nice cooler. $20 MIR, too, if you're into that sort of thing, bringing it down to $550.

I'd just get that, resell the 780 Ti (resale value for this is NOT bad), and enjoy. Upgrade your GPU again in 2+ years.

I'd rather have a 6 core 4930K with a little overclock than a 7700k.
I would wait for Intel's next socket and 6 core mainstream cpu's.

DAVE 3000 WE NEED TO KNOW YOUR MONITOR RESOLUTION!
