Upgrade to 7200rpm

My laptop spec are in my sig. I have a Hitachi 4k60. I am thinking about getting the hitachi travelstar 7k60 and i have read in other forums that the difference between the 4200rpm and thw 7200rpm will be pretty noticable but exactly how much of a difference will there be. Right now I am kind of upset with how slowmy notebook is running. It takes like 4 minutes to go start up to the desktop and programs take a long time to load up. Like interenet explorer can take, I just timed it, 15 seconds to open up and load yahoo. It is used almost entirely as a desktop replacement so battery life is a very minmal issue(although i saw a toms that the travestar takes up very little power).
Does anyone have any benchmarks or first hand experirnce of the difference between a 4200rpm and 7200rpm drive

7.2k is far faster than 4.2k. i've never had 4.2k,but my move from a 5.4k to 7.2k was definitely noticible. everything loaded so much faster, that i couldnt believe.

I've got a 4200RPM 12GB HDD in my lappy (600MHZ) and it's slow but I'm not sure if thats the processor or not but I've had other machines around that speed (desktop) with fast 7200RPM drives and were much faster. I'm thinking of upgrading the HDD in there to a 7200RPM as well and I think it will def be noticeable.

I am pretty well set that I am going to get the hitachi travelstar 7k60. I found a good deal, it is 150 bucks from gateway. But how would I go about transfering the data from my current drive to the new one?

you should get a 5400rpm AT LEAST. 4.2k was way too slow for my taste so i upgraded my dell to a 5.4k drive. Thinking about getting a 7200 rpm drive when prices drop a bit

a 7200 RPM notebook drive will be a bit slower than a desktop drive, but it is WELL worth it. i went from a 7200RPM/8MB cache RAID 0 array with 2 drives in my desktop to a single 7200 RPM drive on my replacement laptop, and the difference in real-world stuff wasn't that big. large transfers you really notice it, but for basic computing tasks, it's as fast as a desktop. in contrast, the 4.2 and 5.4 laptops i've used, even with quick processors, seemed REALLY slow.

so i'd yes, spend the money, get the faster drive!!!

Thanks for the input but Iam wondering what the best way to get the data off the old hard drive is. Should I use like a USB cable and transfer it to my desktop and then I can put it back onto the laptop. Should i get one of those mirroring kits. I am willing to reinstall everything but tell me what you think is best.

I just upgraded form a 30GB Hitachi 4200RPM to a 60GB Samsung 5400RPM for my laptop. It's really nice and I'm very pleased with it. Stuff loads a bunch faster with this and the new memory. I used Norton Ghost, imaged the old drive onto a backup HD, then replaced the image onto the new hard drive and configured the partition sizes with PartitionMagic 8 🙂
