I am unable to update to Vista SP2, but don't care unless it prevents me from upgrading to Windows 7. I know I can do a clean install, but would like to preserve my settings and as much of what I currently have on my Vista machine. My current computer is homebuilt and the full Vista Premium was installed................I have the disc, it is not a preinstalled O/S from dell or HP. I have searched for cures to the Vista SP2 upgrade problem but nothing works. So the question is can I upgrade to Windows 7 over Vista with SP1?

The bottom line answer is yes. All that Win 7 requires is SP1.

I did a clean install, and after a week, I cloned back to Vista and did a direct upgrade. It was perfect and much more satisfactory. All programs and settings worked.

Second that.
In place upgrade worked much much much better than anticipated.

Everything worked fine. With the exception of alcohol 52%, none of the programs even blinked at the upgrade :D

Yes, it was slow (make that very slow) but all the settings remained :)
Furthermore, the system feels very responsive. My configuration was already very snappy, and no speed was lost after the upgrade. Vista AMD64 ultimate -> Win 7 AMD ultimate
