Upgrade time - A64/overclocking recommendations?

Looks like it's time to upgrade my old Athlon XP setup. I recently put in a new PNY GF 6800 for Half Life 2, but the CPU just can't keep up and I want to get the full potential out of my new card. My current system looks like this:

Epox 8k5a2, AXP 1600@2200+ (344 fsb), 768 MB Corsair XMS PC3200 (which I can hopefully re-use)

+ everything else will be transferred to the new system

So I just want to know what's the best overclocking combination for the A64 at the moment? Hopefully there's something out there fairly cheap that overclocks well, like my current XP did. $50 CPU with a 400 mhz overclock was pretty awesome.

Do you guys think it's a good time to upgrade, or would it be better to wait a little while? I would hate to invest in a new mobo just to have amd change to a new socket type and have to do it all over again...

Thanks in advance.

well it all depends on how much you are willing to spend if you got the money go 939 that wont be going anywhere soon and if not skt 754 would be fine because you siad you wanted to keep your graphix card and agp WILL be phazed out so about the time your looking to but a new graphix card you will need a new mobo and then you minght as well but a new processor and have a whole new system. By the way i am personally going to upgrade in the next month or so. (oh if you didnt understand or follow anything i just said thats ok because half the time i dont understand myself either)

yea after looking around a little it seems like the Winchester 64's are kicking some serious ass, so I'm thinking something along the lines of a 3000+ and hopefully getting 2.4-2.5 Ghz out of it on air - so that's right on par with a 3800-4000 right? Newegg has em for $149 which aint bad at all if it will overclock as expected. Then I just need a good mobo and HSF to go with it. If I can re-use my existing RAM then I'll go ahead and spend a good $300 or so for the cpu/mobo/hsf
