Upgrade suggestions

Well I have decided it is time to upgrade, but it has been years since I've really kept up with the industry. That may explain why I am still running a 2500+ on a Lan Party II with 512mb ram. So I turn to you, AnandTech, to suggest some components for me. I am not looking to spend much and don't need to a highend gaming system as I don't game. However, I would like to replace the mobo, processor, ram and video card.

Currently I am running a LanParty II, TBred 2500+ (I think), 512mb Ram, and a Radeon 9500 Pro, but I would like to change those out. As I stated earlier, I am not a gamer and don't intend to play many games, but I would still like to have the option.

Based on that, what suggestions do you have?

1. fill out the sticky
2. what power supply do you have?
3. what OS?
4. abit ip35-e + e8400 + 8800GT + 2x2GB DDR2-800 memory kit is going to be the stock recommendation unless you provide a reason (like budget or use that benefits from quad core) to choose otherwise

if that's too much first thing to cut would be the video card
then maybe the memory to 2gb or the cpu to a E2160 or something and OC it

1. Didn't even see that. I'll contact him.
2. Antec 400W
3. WinXP
4. What kind of price range will that run?

Additional note: Video card must support dual DVI as I currently run 2 x 19" LCD.

Abit IP-35-E, $60 after rebate - http://www.newegg.com/Product/...7031&Tpk=ABIT%2bIP35-E

Intel E2180, $80 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819116052

Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2, $35 after rebate - http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820146565

Inexpensive PCIx Video, $28 after Rebate - http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814130316

The Mobo has onboard Giga Network card.

Optionally it can usually be be OCed (as is) to 2.8 - 3.2 GHz

$203 + Ship, with the potential for easy Upgrade to a Mean Gaming/Crunching computer if so desired.

P.S. minendo, I was writing while you posted the second Post. I do not think that the card support Dual DVI.

Dual DVI cards are much more expensive. Example of a low cost, http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814195009

On this specific issue you might get better advise in the Video forum.

I've decided on this minus the video card as I plan on upgrading that later (don't have the funds to do so now with what I want), but what OS should I invest in? I have XP SP1, but that doesn't seem to support my 300gb hard drive.

Slipstream SP2 into your copy of Windows and no more hdd limitations.

And for the upgrade:
IP35-E ($76)
e2160 or e2180 ($73 or $82)
2x1GB DDR2 ($30)
3450 or 3650 dual dvi ($60 or $80)

Total cost should be around $250. If you don't game at all the 3450 is fine, if you play the occasional light game 3650 is better ($25 more).
