I'm thinking of upgrading my main rig to socket 754 but need some suggestions.

Current specs:

Abit AN7
2400+ @ 2.2Ghz
1GB pc2700 (2.5C @ 200mhz)
ATI 9800 pro.
Seagate SATA 80GB

I would like to keep it as cheap as possible. Id like a board that has a agp/pci lock and can overclock with little trouble. I was also thinking about going with the new Sempron to save money unless someone thinks I really shouldnt??

Going by my current system, should I just wait another few months for skt 939?

I have a similar set-up and I am waiting until around January or February before I plunge into A64 territory...by then a slew of 939 boards will be available...

I am upgrading my CPU to an XP-M to tide me over until then...hopefully I'll be able to pull 2.5-2.6GHz out of whichever one I choose...

I have thought about doing that myself, perhaps getting a mobile 2600+....

Tho socket 754 is supposed to replace socket A and thought perhaps now would be a good time since I would like a little more out of my system for Doom3 and HL2.

Dragon...my current specs are as follows:

Epox 8rda+ Rev: 1.1
AMD Athlon XP 2400+
WD 80gb caviar
Kingston HyperX 512mb pc2700
LiteOn 52x24x52 CD-RW
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
Antec Case (350W PS)

I just bought a AMD Athlon 64 3200+, Epox 8KDA3J socket 754 mobo, and 512mb more memory. I havent received the parts yet but they should be coming around monday from newegg. I will gladly let you know what type of performance increase i got.

They main reason for the upgrade was mainly for Doom III, HL2, Rome: Total War, etc... Hopefully it'll work out great

jimithing2077, I look forward to hearing your results. It does seem like haveing a cpu with a built memory controller and hypertransport running at 600-800-1000Mhz would surely give a increase over what I have now.

I went from a 2.0GHz P4 to the A64, so I was a little more blown away than I'd imagine you'd be. My specs are in my sig, the thing gets 21500-22000 in 3Dmark2001SE if you want to use a bench to guage the performance increase. My belief is that by the time you're ready to upgrade something, most likely the other parts will need it too, that's why I never buy in the hope of being able to upgrade. Being that there's only a $40 or so difference between a 3100+ Sempron (the only one you should get for a performance comp) and a 3000+ A64, I'd get the 3000+, it performs alot better and you can't add L2 cacheto a 3100+. I have an 8KDA3J too, its a great board.
