hi,

my parents motherboard fried and they've asked me to get them new parts. i figure it's a good opportunity to upgrade. i'll just get a couple of new parts for my computer, give my old pieces to my parents and buy whatever else they'll need.

without further ado, here's my parents current setup:
an atx form factor case
celeron 400 MHz
a stick of 64MB 100MHz RAM
a stick of 128MB 100MHz RAM
Quantum Fireball CR 6.5 GB
3D RAGE PRO AGP 2X
floppy, keyboard, mouse, scanner, printer
Some CD Drive - 32x
Rockwell Riptide combo card (supports V.90 K56 Flex protocols)
10/100 Ethernet Card
Rockwell RipTide combo card
HP/Polk Audio stereo speakers
100W bestec power supply
15" monitor
some crap motherboard (which is now dead)

now here's my setup:
Antec SX-1040
Athlon xp 1700+
Soyo k7v Dragon plus
aiw radeon 8500dv
Logitech z560s
logitech cordless freedom optical keyboard & mouse
panasonic floppy drive
acer 56K fax/data modem
Alpha pal8045 w/sunon 43cpm 80mm
lite-on 16x48x dvd-rom
Sound Blaster Audigy oem
2 x crucial 256MB PC2100
1 x crucial 512MB PC2100
Mitsumi 4804TE
2 x Maxtor 60GB hdd
2 x WD 120GB hdd
21" Trinitron Monitor

so the question is:
what parts should i upgrade? i can give my parents my audigy and use the onboard sound on the soyo. or maybe i'll just give them the motherboard and processor and get myself new ones. any suggestions? what would you do?

thank-you

Hey, I'm with ya...bet your 'rents arent into fraggin on line in UT2003...they prolly check email and play a little Freecell or sumthin right?

I'd take the opportunity to get a new mobo/CPU. Give the old ones the soyo and the 1700+ and your 256MB stick of 2100. Then go out and get yourself an NForce2 with a new CPU (2400+? Barton? or keep your 1700+ and buy the rents a Duron 1.3...they will be thrilled with the big boost). You MUST get them a new case/PSU to support the mobo/PSU etc. A new HDD is also a good idea, but not absolutely crucial. Their old system is in dire need of a bunch of new parts: New mobo, CPU, memory, HDD, video, case and PSU.

OR

You might just keep your current setup and buy them a low end mobo like a K7S5A or M7VIG. The M7VIG has onboard video. Stick a Duron or your old 1700+ on it. Still need to get them case/PSU and memory.

I like the first idea...they get a decent new system and you can get closer to cutting edge. How much $$ you got to spend???
