I've got a friend (well, more like a boyfriend) who is getting bit by the upgrade bug (combination of new games running rather crappily - say Doom3 on 640x480, low settings, and no shadows, just so it can run acceptably - and the fact I just spent altogether too much $$$ upgrading my own PC) and I'm trying to decide what would be the best way for him to spend his money...
Right now, he's got:
XP 1900+
512 DDR
Radeon 8500 64mb
I was thinking that he can probably get by for now and get decent performance by just upgrading to a better video card and upgrade the CPU later... something along the lines of a 9800 pro ($200 is about the max budget for a video card) If he gets a 9800 pro, would the difference in performance with the 1900+ to a higher XP CPU, like a 2600+ for example, be very noticable and worth the $100 extra?
On a Doom 3 related-note, people complaining about the game being to dark, you should see it on his monitor - you can't see -anything- except light sources, pretty much. Resorted to playing on the TV through TV-out just to make it playable. Not the fault of the game, just the monitor is a peice of crap and way to dark overall. We're supposed to find him a new one this weekend.
