I currently have 4gb of Kingston pc2-6400 to go along with my AMD X2 5600+. I will be upgrading to a Phenom II 940 3.0ghz Black Edition in the next day or two. Is it essential for me for upgrade to pc2-1066 ram to match the speeds with this chip or will I be fine with 6400?

If you wanted to overclock the faster ram might help. In terms of performance, you won't notice the difference.

If I was building a new system and had to buy new ram, I would probably buy 1066 since the price difference isn't much. If I was in your situation I would just keep my old ram.

In your other post I suggested you stick with the DDR2-800 you already have. Overclocking is not an issue - with the X4 940 you just increase the chip multiplier and your clockspeed goes up. The rest of the system is not affected by the overclock so you don't need high speed memory or anything.

Your link just takes me to a newegg login page - please link directly to the memory not to your wish list.

With the BE chips, RAM is not an issue as you can simply pump up the multiplier without affecting the ram. The problem occurs on the non BE chips where the multipliers are locked. You have to up the FSB, which in turns ups the RAM speeds. The problem is that 6400 ram is not designed to run faster than 800mhz, so you may be limited there.

...and since you're buying a BE chip (X4 940) you'll be fine with the DDR2-800.

Yes, those sticks look good - but are you not going to reuse your current 2x2GB mentioned above? I'd just grab two more 2GB sticks to go with those (try to get same brand/model if possible & not too expensive).

Also, you are using a 64-bit OS, right? :D
