Well, got a new credit card and the wife is gonna let me do some upgrading to the computer, although it does need to be not outrageously expensive and some sort of justification for the parts.
I guess the current system listing will help here and I'll put in some ideas I have already--what I'm looking for is most useful upgrade for the money.
CURRENT SYSTEM--Possible upgrade path
CPU:
Athlon XP 1800--Athlon XP-M 2200
RAM:
384 MB PC2100 (1 256, 1 128)--Kingston Value Ram, 2x256MB PC3200
Motherboard:
Asus A7N8X v2.0--no need to upgrade, might apply some AS5 to the stock Northbridge heatsink though.
Video card:
TNT2 32MB M64--okay, this is where a recommendation would be good, I'm guessing an ATI would be best choice here, but money is also an issue. We have a 17" monitor, so it doesn't necessarily have to run at super high resolutions. It'd be nice to be able to play games newer than Starcraft, Tribes 2, and Solitaire.
Hopefully in the 100-130 range here.
Sound Card:
Both onboard and Sound Blaster Live 5.1--no need to upgrade at this point.
Case/Power Supply:
Raidmax case and Antec True330--well, the case kinda sucks (front bezel is attached with 6 screws and doesn't have sound ports installed, spots for 4 80mm front intake fans, 1 80mm on the side panel, and 1 60mm rear exhaust), but I wouldn't want to pay more than 20-30 for a new one to replace it.
Oh, the power supply should be fine too, got it about 6 months ago and it's been working good.
Hard drives:
20 GB Maxtor and 15 GB WD--Seagate 120 GB or Maxtor 120 GB. Either one looks like a good replacement.
Removable Media:
3.5" floppy--might need to get a different color if I get a different case 🙂
Aopen 52x32x52--works good.
Getting rid of the HP/Philips 4x4x24 though, it doesn't always get recognized by the system and has led to some crashes when the computer tries to access it.
I'm just lazy, which is why I haven't pulled it out and tossed it yet.
Accessories:
Keyboard/mouse/joystick are all nothing fancy, but they work.
Speakers rock: Sony speakers
Might want decent speakers, but don't really have anywhere for a surround system at this point. (boooo)
Okay, also getting a scanner, this one is attractively cheap. (Needed for old family pictures which are slowly dying).
Would also like to consider getting a UPS, but definitely with some line conditioning included.
Errrrr, so that's it, eh?
Oh, and I guess I'll toss in a couple of single device rounded IDE cables, and possibly a new HSF for the CPU, and possibly northbridge. Although a new case should come before those.
Thanks in advance    🙂
