Upgrade Questions - A Little Lost This Time

Hi guys. OK, so I have upgrade-itis again. It's tax season, you know? So, I decided that maybe I could do with a new video card. Who doesn't want a new GPU? Anyway, after some searching, it appears that I'm WAY behind the times. I don't know if it's just that sweet spot in GPU advances or if it's really been longer than I thought between upgrades.

Regardless, I need some advice, so I came to you. It may be that the desire to spend money is all I have and not really a need to upgrade anything. Here's the setup:

Currently running 2 x 6950's in Crossfire at stock speeds. Not a big fan of overclocking video cards as I've had some bad luck and experiences in the past.

i5 2500k at 4.4 GHz

I finally got my monitor working right at 1440p. it came with the wrong cable and I've played hell finding the right one. However, at 1080p things ran fine, look great, and continue to do so. It's the 1440p res that I'm worried about.

I love my eye candy, and never like to sacrifice looks in my games just to squeeze out a few more FPS. I'm not a competitive First Person Shooter gamer, so I prefer my games to wow me with their graphics even at the cost of a few FPS.

First of all, there's a lot of options out there, but I wonder if it's even worth upgrading right now or if I might be better off waiting on a future product or lower prices on current ones. I don't play BF4 or any first person shooter for that matter. I mostly stick to RPGs, with the occasional action game thrown in (like Arkham City). There are some new games coming out later this year that I wonder about my setup's ability to handle the way I want it to.

If it is time to upgrade, what best bang for your buck these days? I don't mind spending 600 bucks on a new card, but in my experience I get far more satisfaction (for several reasons) from spending less and upgrading more often. Also, I couldn't care less whether it's AMD or nVidia. I've owned both and enjoyed both. Thanks in advance all.

Edit: something I failed to mention. I run a dual monitor setup, and AMD seems to handle windowed mode very well compared to nVidia. Also I love that these 2 cards are very quiet. I would prefer to stay away from noise makers like my old 8800 GTX. Not opposed to an aftermarket fan option if it's worth it for the right card though.

What titles are you waiting for later in the year? Right now is a terrible time to buy AMD gpu's because cryptic urgencies (phone auto corrected crypto currencies and it was awesome so i left it)are driving their prices through the roof.

If the uocoming games you want are coming out in the fall then I would just wait. We should be seeing new cards from amd and nvidia around the fall/holiday season.

If you are dead set on upgrading now then I would find an aftermarket gtx780 with a nice quiet cooler on it.

Witcher 3, Dragon Age III, and Dark Souls II which should be coming out Q2, Q3, and next month respectively. I don't mind waiting. I've waited this long, after all. Paying 500+ dollars for the "cheaper" cards does make my eye twitch a little. I have to say, I was not prepared for the inflation in GPU price.

Waiting is always an option, but at some point you need to buy. There will always be something around the corner.

With that said, are there any games that you play that need an upgrade? If not, I would wait until you play a game where you aren't happy with your framerates.

Perhaps this is pretty good advice. If I'm going to be spending 200 bucks more than I originally thought on an upgrade, I think I'll just wait until I definitely need an upgrade. I could build a fairly decent budget gaming rig for the cost of some of these cards right now. Maybe I'll grab an SSD for the HTPC instead.

SSD sounds like a lot better choice right now then buying an AMD video card. 280X's are $500+, 270X's are approaching $300, reference 290s are $600 and non-reference 290X's are approaching 1k ($900 atm if you want to be exact)

The more crypto prices plummet, the more inflated the prices of AMD GPU's become o_O
