Upgrade question! (pentium!)

Alright, i love AMD, but my old old home computer is a pentium 2 450. (don't hit me please :Q) I don't know what motherboard it uses, but i have a few questions.

1) I'm considering an upgrade to a p4. Would my powersupply support the new motherboard?

2) For my new motherboard, it just needs to be stable, no overclocking. I heard intel boards are good. Can anyone give me the series number? (the DDR and the non-DDR)

3) I'm looking at about a $200~ price range (lower better). Whats the best value i can get out of it, without needing to upgrade anytime soon?

1. No as the P4 uses a different connector for the motherboard, and an old P2 PS would not supply enough for a P4 system.

You can get a SiS 645DX based motherboard for around $65 and 1.6A $135(=$200),
but you still need at least a new DDR RAM and Power Supply.

Your P2 has PC100 SDRAM not RDRAM. Depending on the mobo you might be able to get a "slocket" converter and put in a Celeron up to 1 GHz (but not the 256K "A" Celerons, AKA Tulatins).

Many P4 mobos require a new case as well as power supply, because of the P4 heatsink assembly. A good Antec case with PS (sx-630) costs $65 + shipping at newegg. That + ECS mobo + P4-Celeron-1.7 ($96) is going to cost about $230 + shipping.

sorry about the RDRAM mistake, it is indeed pc100 SDRAM.

i looked around, and have a few questions.

Besides the obvious price difference between celeron and P4 1.7s, is there a big difference in performance wise? I know that the p4 has better build and all, is there a big speed/performance difference? Is the cache and FSB different?

Also, i really don't want to spend another 50+ for a case, whats so different about the heatsink assmbly that would make my old case obsolete? I have a lot of room and space left in my case...

one last question: How much do the intel p4 boards cost?
