i am trying to upgrade from win 98 to win xp.
here's the deal:
the hard drive on my laptop (micron gobook pent 1 233MHz MMX 64 MB 3.2 GB) is partitioned
into two drives (c & d - the c has 1.99 gb and the d 948 mb.). i never did this personally as i wouldn't know how to, but it is possible that my friend did. i think i bought it new with one drive, but i could be wrong. firstly, i would like to know if the two drives can be combined.

secondly, i have saved all my precious docs and files on a zip. i would like to format everything, start fresh... then install 98 and upgrade to xp... how should i proceed?????????
basically i dont know at all what im doing and am looking for an angel to help me.

you can fix the hard drive partitions with "fdisk" in DOS. before you install, make sure you have all your important docs etc. backed up. And also make sure you have drivers for XP in case you need them.

This is very good advice!

Go to Micron?s website and download all the most current drives, copy them onto a zip drive or burn a CD. Also, be sure to check whether or not your laptop is compatible with Windows-XP... can save you many headaches later.

so i should just type "fdisk" in DOS and that will elimanate the partition???

i have an xp pro cd - does that mean i have the drivers?

Type "fdisk". Then enable "Large Disk Support", and choose to delete an existing partition. After that choose to create a partition. Make sure you choose "Primary", and "Bootable". After it's done partitioning, exit and start your XP installation. XP will format the drive for you.

XP usually automatically detects and installs drivers for everything - that's one of its best features.

To unify your hard drive into one drive, boot from a floppy (like a Win98SE boot disk) into DOS and type "fdisk" (without the quotes) and hit enter. In FDisk you're going to want to delete all of your partitions, then create a partition. It will ask you if you wish to use all of the space on the disk: you will type Y or yes (use the whole disc as one). Then it will tell you the partition was created.

At this point, reboot the machine from the floppy into DOS again. When in DOS, type (without the quotes, of course): "format c:" and then hit enter ... this then formats the disc (you can skip this step and do it later in the WinXP setup if you wish).

Then go into your BIOS and choose your CD drive as the first drive to boot from. Reboot with the XP CD in the drive - it should boot into the XP setup. Follow the on-screen instructions and install XP on the drive.
