Upgrade PS4 hard drive?

I know I'm going to upgrade the hard drive on my PS4 since 500GB eventually won't be enough but I'm wondering if I should do it now or wait until later. Right now, the most recommended seems to be the 1TB Seagate hard drive:

It seems like a solid choice but I might eventually need more than 1TB and wish they had a 1.5TB version. I know I can get a non hybrid 1.5TB but do like having lower waiting times. Are there any other hard drives that you would recommend checking out?

Also, do you think it would be better to pull the trigger now or wait until I actually need the space? If I get one now I won't have much to reinstall plus I can benefit from the slightly reduced load times. If I wait until I actually need the space I'll have more stuff to reinstall but might benefit from a better hard drive available at the future. I'm only looking to spend around $100 so even if SSD's halfed in price by the time I needed the space the slightly lower load time wouldn't be worth the cost of one.

I would upgrade when you actually run out of space since HDDs get cheaper and larger with time. If you are going to upgrade, might as well go for the 2TB option:

Loading times are not that dramatically lowered by the SSHD on PS4:

The other thing is a 960-1TB SSD already goes on sale for as low as for $360, a price of a 512GB drive 1 year ago:

SSDs tend to drop in price by about half in 1-1.5 years which means 1TB SSD should be $180 in 1.5 years. To compete, 2.5 inch HDDs will need to grow in size or fall dramatically in price. That's why if you don't need the extra space yet, keep waiting.

I'd wait and see. Here's my thing, you may feel you would run out of space but when that happens look at your collection. I'm sure there would be games on there you'll never touch again and can safely delete them without worry.

I recently had to delete a bunch of stuff. Sure I can download it later but when someone else comes over and wants to play a game, I don't want to have to download stuff all over again. 500GB really isn't much when lots of games take around 50GB. It seems most average around 20-30GB plus updates etc etc. Most of us would like to keep our games installed.

There are always lots of games I'll never play again. If I thought like that I would need a hundred HDDs for my pc games

Hybrid drives are meant to serve as boot drives. They store frequently accessed files on a small NAND chip, so the OS can call them up quickly. Since the PS4 mainly uses it's hard drive for mass storage, you're not going to see much benefit.

As for Solid State Drives, they're still quite expensive in large capacities. Price has come down sharply in the last year or so. However, drives over 512GB will probably cost as much as you paid for the console. They are quite a bit faster, but the PS4 really can't take full advantage of the technology to make it worth the added cost.

I'd probably settle on a 1TB 7200rpm drive.

Thanks for the replies. Right now all my games are on disc so it's not a long process to reinstall them. Still, I'm down to 188GB so I'll probably upgrade in the future. I think I'll just go for the 2TB since that will be enough space for the life of the system and the slight loading time increase of 7200rpm over 5400rpm isn't worth sacrificing the extra terabyte of space.

Lol that's horrible. Would be cool if that whole left side could slide off and you could snap a new one in with a bigger capacity drive.

No you can't, but I know you know that. :p

I meant using the 2tb backup plus internally, but I was in a rush and didn't post clearly. Thanks for picking up my slack. ;) This is by far the best bang for the buck on the market, especially since the alternative speed upgrades have such minimal impacts on load times.

Many big capacity 3.5" HDDs are green drives at 5400rpm. So there is no benefit IMO. You need this accessory plus the drive. Probably a wash in price.

Besides that, the ps4 is picky with HDDs. I doubt many drives wouldn't even work.

Your best bet is to get a 1tb hg travelstar or whatever they used in the ign video for upgrading the hard drive and swap it for the stock one. I have plenty of space on mine as I uninstall games I finish.

Yea I've been wanting to get a 1TB drive. I like keeping many games on hand for when someone comes over. The stock drive is really tiny.

I would say there are more 7200 RPM 3.5 HDs but depending on the price of this Nyko device it might be a wash like you said. I was under the impression that finding the right PS4 HD had more to do with the thickness than anything else. It's still nice having options...

There are definitely more performance 3.5" drives outside of SSD's. Don't know why anyone would say otherwise.

This article says they are aiming for $30-$40 which isn't bad. $50 though would be too much IMO.

Yeah that would be a decent price where I think a lot would go for it. I mean.. I could get a 3TB 3.5 drive for around $100.00 and that would probably last a pretty long time.

That isn't what I said. The big capacity drives, most of them are the green drives that spin slower on purpose to save power. The faster ones (western digital black) are roughly $100 more

Yeah I got a 1TB 7200rpm HGST Travelstar for my PS4, pretty happy with it and it costed me only $55 CDN. lol

I got it for around $100 and I figured the extra terabyte of storage more than made up for any slight loading time increases with a 7200 or hybrid. I just installed it tonight (pretty simple and quick process) and now have 1.77TB of space. I have everything downloading overnight. I'm probably going to end up swapping out my PS3 hard drive with the old PS4 one.
