So, This thread started with "Bus Powered FW800..." but has changed enough for me to start a new one.

Anyway, I've got a mid-2010 Macbook Pro with a TOSHIBA MK5055GSXF (500GB, details here) honestly, a pretty good Laptop HDD, but I wanted a SSD. After reading a lot of the anand articles on SSD's and the various controller problems, I decided to go for an X-25M series, specifically the 160GB G2. In addition, I ordered a OWC Mercury On the Go Pro (detals here) to put the Toshiba into for portable storage (its bus powered :)

Anyway, here's where advice, or at least a second (or more) pairs of eyes would be helpfull.

I've currently got ~350GB's worth of data on the Toshiba.
The X-25M is a 160GB drive.
I only have one external, a WD 2TB (USB 2.0 only...ugh...).

So, here's the HDD Shuffle I've come up with, (forgive the extraneous steps, I copied and pasted the instructions I wrote up for myself)

1: 1. Partition the WD 2TB into Partition A (WD ParA) and Partition B (WD Par B)
2. Move all non-essential Media Data to WD ParA.
a. Goal is less than 140GB on current internal (Toshiba)
b. Confirm all data is copied and good to go on the WD ParA
3. Delete the non-essential Media Data from the Toshiba
a. Empty the Recycle Bin
4. Run Time Machine on the Toshiba to Partition B (WD ParB).
a. Run Time Machine **AFTER ** the media transfer is complete.
5. Confirm Time Machine worked properly.
6. Shut down everything.
7. Follow instructions from http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/...nibody-Mid-2010-Hard-Drive-Replacement/3030/1
a. Install the X-25M
8. Re-assemble the Macbook Pro (MBP)
9. Check the MBP, make sure there’s no missing parts
10. Install the Toshiba into the OWC External Enclosure (Toshiba)
11. Plug the WD 2TB into the Computer
a. Make sure the WD 2TB is connected to power
12. Log into the computer and restore using Time Machine
13. Confirm everything has been copied to the new boot drive properly
14. Plug in the Toshiba via FW800
15. Format the Toshiba w/ secure erase
16. Copy all data from WD ParA to Toshiba
a. Confirm the data on the Toshiba is good to go
17. Format the WD 2TB back into one 2TB Partition
18. Run Time Machine on both the internal and Toshiba HDD’s (Ongoing Process)

I've got all the hardware necessary, save a tri wing screwdrive (not required, just recommended).

If anyone can suggest a better way to do this, please let me know. Otherwise, I'm planning on doing it sometime Thursday Afternoon (GMT +3, Baghdad).

In addition, I will plan on taking pictures of the process, just for fun.

One last thing. I would like to run some benchmarks on the current HDD and the new one, but I'm running OSX 10.6.4. Anyone know of any good benchmarks for OSX 10.6.4? Anand, I know you wrote that script once to test load times, can I download it somewhere, or could you give instructions on writing the script? If you give instructions, I'm a Very basic Command Promt user (I've written one two line batch file), but have never used Terminal.

Thanks!

Just wanna throw in the following info:

1) SSDs perform worst when they are almost full. You generally want to have like ~20% empty space at least.

2) That G2 only has 148 gigs of usable formatted space. Your plan would leave it with 8 gigs free.
