Upgrade PII 266 to Celeron?

I decided to take my old P2 266 out of the closet and plug it into my network.
I upgraded the video card to a MX200, but still cant compete with
the other PC when playing games on the network.
Can I upgrade it to a Celeron? How fast? PPGA/FCPGA?

The mobo is an intel PD440FX.

I found this on Intel's website. Which doesnt guarantee that it will be able to handle a Celery. But I also found some success testimonials on other websites.

Any help with this is appreciated.
I want my old PC to live long and prosper.

I really hate to say this, but it's almost like a proprietary design board. It probably doesn't have the voltage capability to run a Celly. You could always get a BX board, or a Socket 7 for very cheap. ( Socket 7 for AMD K6's of course :p ) What form factor is it? ( i.e. Flex-ATX, Mini-ATX, Mid-ATX, etc. )

It says it supports the PII 333, which like a PPGA Celery, is 2.0 Vcore. If you wanted to try, a C533 PPGA and a slocket might work.

Not to rain on the 266 parade, just it seems like a lot of work for very little gain. If you aren't economically challenged and feel like putting together a budget burner, I'd suggest this:
Compgeeks P3 1ghz w/ MoBo bundle

For $162 you get a good board with onboard audio, and a great cpu (which alone costs $140) then simply move the GX MX200 into this PC. Anyone care to chip in with a Duron 1 ghz/ECS MoBo bundle ? This would be similarly priced but I'm just more familiar with the Intel side so that's why I suggested what I have.

Hi Marocco,

I use a dell XPS 233, samo MOBO. you can use a slotket, but it will 'forget' to enable L2 cache.
and you will have to press F1 to skip that error during boot, every time! I had a 900Mhz/100 cely @ 600Mhz/66,
but I switched back to 233 PII! due to low memory Bandwith this board sucks.

I also had teh same board, only trouble free processor I had using with the slotket was a ppga celeron (up to 533, looks like a pentium mmx chip). P3s in it as well as the celeron 2s would give me a fit of trouble (one similiar to what is stated above). other problems being blue screens, lock-ups, sometimes a reboot.

Get e good slotket and something like a celeron 500 ppga and as long as you set the slotkey jumpers like ti says to, you shouldnt have any trouble.

Also, just to squeeze a little bit more out fo your 266, I have encountered quite a few of the 266s that werent multiplier locked, you may be able to run it at 300 or even 333 with not any trouble. Worth a shot to try it, if ti winds up being locked, no loss, but if it isnt, it will give you a slight mhz gain.

I updated the Bios to the last version of it (the version which supposedly can handle 333mhz)
then I changed the jumper settings to what the 333mhz instructions say.

My PC only powers up at 133mhz.

Does that mean that the processor is locked? or am I missing something?

I couldnt find any FSB settings in the manual or in the Bios.

Its locked. You would be a very lucky fella to come across an unlocked 266, although that was the last cpu that was somewhat available with an unlocked multiplier. I know that a lot of the Celeron 266's were not locked tho. Since they were cacheless, they were very poor performers, but in a BX board you could clock the hell out of them, up to 448 fairly easily, as there was no cache to heat up and cause problems. You sure are putting some time into this for not a lotta return, but best of luck anyhow.

Update: the 300mhz setting did boot up at 300.
So it looks like maybe the 333 setting are really 133 settings?

I dont know enough about this stuff. The settings chart is here.
Maybe they will look familiar to some of you experienced tweakers.

I'm not really planning to use this pc for anything, just having fun taking it apart and playing with it's innards.
I'm mostly doing it to learn a bit about overclocking and upgrading old PCs.

Sounds good :) I'm doing the same upgrade actually, from a 266 to a 300, next week. I found out the board I'm working on can support a 433 so now I hafta start hunting for one of those chips. It's a constant source of frustration when you have a few PC's to work with and even fewer $$ to get the job done right :disgust:

I plugged a C500 ppga (is there any way to confirm it really is a PPGA?) into a Super Slocket III.
When I power the PC on I get a bit of hard drive activity but nothing else.

I played around with the jumper settings on my MOBO, and it looks like I can change the FSB to 60 or 66
and the vcore (?) from 2.5 through 5.5 (at each .5).
I've tried variations of these with my PII and the highest I could get to work was 300.
I've tried variation of these with my Celeron, and was unsuccessful.

I've set the jumpers on the SLOCKET to "auto FSB" (other options are 66, 100, 133)
and the CPU brand jumper to Celeron. (other options are cyrix)
and the CPU mode to Single CPU. (other option is double)

Whats interresting is that with certain jumper settings Sandra recognizes my PII as being a Celeron.
Is there anything I am missing? Do I need to do anything else for my Celeron to work or does it sound
like it's pretty much a nogo with this mobo.
