Upgrade path for a bum: G860 > G3258

Hello, so I'm thinking about upgrading my PC. (it's in the signature)
I was thinking about upgrading my cpu (G860 Pentium) to the new, cheap and unlocked haswell G3258. Is it worth it? I could probably do this with minimal investment. With a slight overclock to about 3.5ghz I'd expect a ~33% increase in cpu performance. Is this realistic?

An alternative to this upgrade path would be getting an athlon 760k.

Please share your thoughts!

Neither the Haswell or the Athlon would fit in your mobo.

You should look for an i5 3000 series ivy bridge. Then you should be set upgrade wise for a good time.

You would need a new motherboard so cost would be fairly close to just replacing your current CPU with an IB i5. The i5 would be the better upgrade.

I know this. It is not an issue, I can just sell my old mobo+cpu and buy new ones with haswell or athlon. Everything is calculated.
An i5 would require at least a 100usd investment even after old cpu is sold. A switch to Haswell would be around 50 american moneys.

Got to agree, you would be better off getting a 2nd hand Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge i5.

Why not just get a I7 3770k or even an I5 2500k. Either would be a vast improvement on your board.

So $100 = Quad core 3.2+ GHz 6M cache most features enabled vs $50 = Dual core 3.5 GHz 3M cache many features disabled.

Now if you get a Z97 board and think you'll replace the Pentium with a Haswell or Broadwell K within the next year then sure, go for it.

wouldn't it be more than $100 out of pocket for an i5? G860 isn't going to sell for much.

Can buy a new i5 2400 for $150 and can find used ones for $100 or less. The 2400 seems to be the sweet spot price wise. The 2300 and Ivy series seems to shoot up to around $170-180.

yes, used sandy/ivy bridge i5 is the way to go
you don't need to replace your MB and it's a better CPU than any Pentium anyway.
