Hey all, haven't posted in the anandtech forums in a while, but I thought you guys would probably be the best to ask about this. Well here is my situation, I haven't upgraded my comp in a while (other than vid card) and I am working on an upgrade path right now. So here is my current situation, hehe its a weird setup ;)

1. Abit BX6 R2 (Ata/33 only onboard)
2. Celeron 400 -> 500
3. 192 Megs of PC100
4. UltraWideSCSI 9.1 Gig HD with USCSI PCI Card
5. GeForce 32 Meg SDR
6. SB Live PLatinum
7. Yamaha 4*4*16 CDR
8. Sony 32X CDROM

Ok yes yes laugh it up, my setup is a tad lopsided ;) Well anyways, here is what I had in mind for the upgrade.

Intel P3 800 Mhz Slot 1 - $217.18
30GB ATA/100 IBM 75GXP 7200 - $149.99
ATA/100 Card from Promise - $31.73

All prices are from Onvia, I am going to be making lots of purchases and I dont need the absolutelowest prices and wanna buy all from onvia. Well I have a few questions, first of all does this seem like the sane thing to do for my upgrade? Also, I have 100 bucks left to spend, what do ya think I should get? I was thinking an Intellimouse, but not sure yet.

Now onto some more technical questions. My new drive setup will be the USCSI card with the 9.1 gig on it, the ATA 100 with the 75GXP on one channel and possibly my CDR on the other, and finally one of my onboard ATA33's will hold my sony CDROM. Will that work out ok? Is there a different way I should set it up?

Ok and one final thing (heh this is getting long ;). The P3 800 that I am getting is a 100 FSB Slot 1 P3 and I have heard those are pretty easy to overclock. What do you guys think? How high do you think it could go and what fan should I get?

Well I guess thats it, thanx a lot I really appreciate any help.

A nice large heatsink will be nice, but the really large ones tend to block the first sdram slot on the bx6 r2 boards. Has far has the setups for the drives go, it looks fine to me.

I don't think the 800E is a great overclocker. You are really throwing the dice when you buy a P3 for overclocking. If the overclock is really important, I would buy a pretested one from the For Sale/Trade forum. If you like to gamble, go for it.

Here's another vote for a pre-tested CPU. I picked up a sweet cb0 P3 700e that does 933 @ default voltage from Compuwiz, he's got cc0 700e's guaranteed to over 1 gig as well.

Nah I am not hell bent on 200 Mhz overclocks at all =) Hehe just want the option to OC it when it starts getting old, maybe to 900 or 950 or something.

So at the moment I think the extra 100 bucks is going to a nice heatsink/fan and an intellimouse, any other ideas for what I should get?

Well thanx again everyone, just wanted to be sure I was heading in the right direction for this upgrade.

TheCorporal,

I would agree with most people when they say that the P3 800E (especially the 800EB)are not great overclockers, but since you arent looking for a monster OC like most people at this site, the 800E would be a good choice. the 800E would be a good candidate for a mild OC when times start changing again and you want to upgrade without spending money on a new CPU. i dont know the exact numbers what it comes to the OCability of the 800E, but 900-950 mHz sounds like its in the right neighborhood as you suggested. remember, get the 800E and not the 800EB, b/c the EB is already set to run @ 133 fsb. a change in the fsb being the only way to OC an intel CPU, you would have to push your system to run above 133 mHz fsb. the 800E is set to run @ 100 fsb, leaving plenty of headroom for OCing. besides, changing the fsb from 100 to 133 with an 800E would yield a CPU clock of 1064 mHz (1.064 gHz), which it probably wouldnt hit without special cooling anyway...so you wouldnt even have to go as high as 133 fsb to get a mild but healthy OC out of the 800E...

Vioer GTS,

i'm very interested in the P3 700E w/ cC0 stepping (especially if its guaranteed to OC to a gig or so). i went to compuwiz.com and the site was under construction or just getting put up on the web (i dont know which). how did you contact Compuwiz? by phone or something?

Thanx a lot guys, and yea I know how to OC dont worry, I used to be into the whole hardcore overclocking scene, but I have been way to busy lately with www.realgn.com and www.pcparadox.com

OK ok sorry, hehe shameless plug ;)

Anyways, yea I was definitly getting the 800E, and I believe I could take it to around 8.0 * 112 after half a year and maybe more to keep it going strong.

Thanx again guys, just one last thing, what do you suggest for a good cooling solution, remember this IS a Slot1 P3 so no fancy socket stuff ;)

Try This:

BX6R2
160MB PC100 generic (cas2@100 set to 232@117MHZ)
Iwill SlocketII
PIII 800E @ 936MHZ (117 X 8), 1.7V - FCPGA
Retail HSF worked fine but added gorb for extra cooling at the slight overclock.
ATA33 Maxtor Drives

Works for me - and all for less than $200, still get some mileage from my PC100 memory.

It would probably be better to go w/an fcpga cpu and just use a slotket. When I was using an Abit BE6-2 slot 1 mobo I just bought a P3 700 fcpga cpu(cB0) and used a slocket w/it. Later when I changed to an Asus CUSL2 fcpga mobo I just dropped the slotket. It's been running nicely at 1ghz for awhile now using only a golden orb.

it is not all p3-800 can not overlock, like mine one, i have p3-800 run at 1000 now! totaly stable, run for 4 month already! i loop all game, setihome, 3dmark2000 without problem. and that is for my first system, my second system is p3-700 and only can do 882, i try to push to 910 or 933 but can not boot anything! my p3-800 can boot at 1066 but it's not stable, just stable at desktop application like; surfing, chatting etc. soooooooo it's just a luck if we want to overlock, depend u get the good cpu or bad cpu! good luck mate

Yeah, it really does depend on the cpu. I've been able to run my P3 700 at over 1.1ghz(158 fsb) using a 72w pelt and PEP66 w/delta fan, but it wasn't too stable and the noise of the delta fan is really annoying.

Hey guys, thanx for the offers, but I think I am set on getting an 800. I have the money for it, and its probably my best option.

Btw glad to hear that someone had some good luck with their 800 overclocking =) My ram isnt all that high quality so I doubt I will get past 900 or 950, but thats all I want, I am fine with that.

Thanx again everyone, I really appreciate it!
