Upgrade or keep this?

Hey!

I'm still rocking my 6+ years old i7-3700K (@4.4) on an ASRock Z77 Extreme4 with 2x8gb DDR3 2133. I also still run a EVGA GTX 970 SSC 4gb.

I'd like to upgrade my GPU (upgrade itch) but not sure if it would worth it.

Is my current setup enough to support a newer GPU?

Should be just fine for a new GPU.

Mark is right, your 4C/8T ivy is still pretty solid at 4.4Ghz.

GPU prices are terrible though. What's your budget like? (For reference, a 1060 would be a bit of a sidegrade other than for 1440p on the 6GB model, so you need at minimum a 1070 or Vega 56 to notice an improvement).

Budget would be around $400-$500...but seeing the weird prices I can wait for a drop or sale to grab a new one.

With that budget i'd aim for 1070 *Ti* or vega 56 (if one can be found and power draw is not an issue)

Absolutely true, though I intended to establish the minimum mark for a noticeable change from a 970 SSC. The 1070ti should definitely be chosen over a vanilla (or especially an FE model) 1070 provided the price gap isn't out of whack.

A good 11gbps revision 1080 AIB would be my personal recommendation given the usual price/performance scale we've seen lately. 1080ti usually are so much more expensive that it's hard to swallow, 2080/2080ti are stupid expensive, Vegas are as expensive as 10xx but hotter/hungrier, and so on. YMMV of course.

Yeah, wait for price drops. AMD will eventually make something vaguely more competitive, and at that point Nvidia will drop prices.

A 1080 or Vega 64 new would be a good upgrade. Both $500 or under. For used, you should be able to get a 1080 Ti with that budget.
