Upgrade or clean install for vista?

I know what most people think should be done but as I have read vista upgrade is completely different than the old versions of windows. It totally cleans out everything and gives you a clean install. Does anyone care to comment on this. It takes a lot longer to do the upgrade but in the long run it would save me at least 12 or more hours of reinstalling all the software on my computer.

upgrade: check validity of previous os, overwrites files
full: no check, overwrites files

its the same difference aside from speed, after install it wont matter

So, do you have vista installed on your systems?

Two of them at home, yea.

Plus my main tools box at work plus several more running in VMs all over the place.

Do the clean install. It's only slighly more work. You could do a clean install and get most of your core apps in place before an upgrade would be even close to finishing. You'll remove a LOT of variables from the picture and have a great experience.
