Hello,

I currently have an Acer 27inc (freesync) 1440 monitor, and Radeon R2 290x video card. I am having a hard time pushing FPS up above 60 in most games like BF1, Overwatch, Witcher3, ect. So a couple of questions.

  1. Is it worth upgrading to a newer video card to push the limits of my 144 Hz monitor?
  2. If so should I consider an AMD upgrade to utilize freesync, or should I go with an Nvidia card?
  3. I also run a Intel i5 3570K. Would this CPU be a bottle neck for an upgraded video card?

I guess I'm debating whether I should consider a new computer build, or if I can still get another couple of years out of my current setup with a newer video card and 2k monitor.

I'm running a 1070 at 2050 at 1440p and I feel I need more performance in some games, especially bf1 and most recently ghost recon wildlands. I'm waiting on vega to see if there is something worth upgrading to and if not then on the volta/navi.

As for your cpu. My 1070 was being bottlenecked by a 4670k at 4.7 in bf1 when I was still on 1080p/144. Was the only game I had that issue in and it was incredibly small but it was there none the less.

To answer your questions:

1: if you aren't happy with a 290x w/ freesync on 1440p I doubt you'll be happy with a 1070. There's always the 1080/TitanXP but I'd wait on vega and 1080ti to see what they bring. It's closing in on a year since 1080/1070 released and that's a poor time to buy.
2: That really depends on what Vega brings to the table compared to 1080ti.
3: A 4670k at 4.7 currently bottlenecks a 1070 at 2050 in BF1 at 1080p/144. Here's what you can do though, drop your graphics settings to all low and see what fps you get. If you are happy with that fps then your cpu will provide you what you need, if not then look for a cpu/platform upgrade. Could very well be an interesting time for a platform upgrade with Ryzen on the horizon.

A fury (x) isn't a very appealing upgrade path if you already have a 290x, maybe if it's very cheap, and a 480 isn't much of an upgrade at all so don't get that.

I'd postpone the upgrade until vega is released.

Thanks for the information. I was hoping to squeeze out some more time with my rig. I guess I will be doing a rig upgrade this Thanksgiving. ThanKS again.

Drop settings to low. Then take a look at GPU performance % in afterburner it should be under 100%, hopefully under 90. This is the MAX fps that your CPU can output . Try OCing to see how FPS changes.

As far as the video card goes, right now is the worst time to upgrade as both AMD and Nvidia are releasing more info on their new cards (Vega / 1080 Ti) on the 28th which at the very least will drop current pricing as products will likely shift down.
