Folks,

I have a 2x500PIII slot/katmai 100Mhz FSB rig that i am considering for a processor upgrade. Unfortunately, I have lost track of the Intel pre-coppermine processor configurations. So, I thought I'd ask here:

1) What is the highest clocked slot intel processor that can replace my 500 katmai's?

2) Are all Socket-370 processors Coppermine.133MhzFSB parts, or are there 100FSB Coppermines and/or Socket-370 Katmai's? In other words, is it safe to assume that the widely available 850Mhz.100FSB parts are slot configurations?

Much thanx.

cheers.

What the highest processor your board can take will depend upon the capabilities of the board itself. In most cases it should be able to take at least a 600MHz Katmai. Without knowing the motherboard in question, I'm unsure if it will accept the Coppermine.

The highest clocked Katmai released was the 600MHz variant which was available at FSV speeds of 100 and 133MHz.

All Socket370 Pentium 3 processors currently available are Coppermine's, there are of course non-Copperine S370 Celeron's available.
There are 100 and 133MHz FSB Coppermine Pentium 3's. A 100MHz FSB Copperine is not necessarily a Slot1 processor, there are Socket370 and Slot1 versions of the Pentium 3 operating at both 133 and 100MHz FSB.

There are no Scket 370 Katmai processors, that would be impossible because the L2 cache on the Katmai is separate from the processor core. On a Slot1 Katmai the L2 cache chips rest on the PCB on both sides of the processor die.

Rand,

Thanks for the response. The board is a Dell 440BX-based WTX branded as a Precision Workstation. Given your observations, I suppose the question to ask would be if there are any Slot1 Coppermines @100FSB? Your message would seem to suggest that there are.

cheers.

Yes there are 100MHz FSB Slot1 Coppermine processors. Te Slot 1 Coppermine using a 100MHz FSB is available at clockspeed up to 1GHz.

Yep...the fastest slot 1 pentium is 1Ghz...i got one and it's rock solid...though unoverclockable recently...and the fastest 100mhz bus fcpga i think is 850mhz?...intel will be releasing a 1ghz and 1.1ghz fcpga pentium 100mhz bus in a month...which makes no sense because it's so late...off topic but a 1ghz t-bird is now $97...and when intel releases theirs it'll be over $250...uhhh ok...the 133mhz bus version will be cheaper...since it's been out...go figure.

Folks,

Thanx for the info. It appears I am now in the market for a couple of Slot1, 100Mhz FSB, 1Ghz PIII's (I am assuming, of course, that the 440BX mobo shall not mind the coppermines). Any online vendors you might recommend?

cheers.

The fastest FCPGA 100MHz FSB Coppermine is 900MHz, which also happens to be the only 900MHz Coppermine.
Try looking through PriceWatch.com for the best prices. It might take a bit of looking as the 1GHz processor at 100MHz FSB tends to be a bit difficult to find.

Regarding you mobo and Coppermine compatibility, I'm not positive as I don't deal with Dell systems personally and so am not terribly familiar with the boards they use. Checking the Dell site it gives me the impression that the board will support Coppermine's but I'm not sure on that.
I'd suggest you contact Dell tech support to check on compatibility with the Coppermine.

Thanx Rand, i'll double check w/ the Dell people. Incidentally, in your last post, I trust you are referring to the SECC2(Slot1) as opposed to FCPGA(Socket370) processor capping at 900Mhz, or am I out to lunch on these designations?

cheers.

I'll provide the full list of 100MHz FSB Coppermine processors to ensure your understanding.

Slot1 SECC2 100MHz FSB Coppermine available in clockspeeds of: 550,600,650,700,750,800,850Mhz,1GHz.
FCPGA S370 100MHz FSB Coppermine available in clockspeeds of: 500,550,600,650,700,750,800,850Mhz,900MHz.

The S-Spec for the 100Mhz FSB 1GHz Coppermine is SL4KL or SL4BR.
