hey guys

i have a roommate wanting to upgrade his ageing socket 5 based computer (kinda low on cash to buy a new comp), so i was wondering what options exist for upgrading a socket 5 processor.

he currently has a EVERGREEN chip @200 mhz (Centaur/IDT WinChip is what my TestCPU program calls it) and anything affordable above 300 mhz would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for all your help in advance...

The chance of him upgrading a socket 5 beyond 200 mhz, is prolly next to impossible, but what may make a considerable differnce is to load it up with some more ram, you can prolly get some old simms relatively cheap now.

answer: buy insurance. Then get someone to take your computer away when you're out and claim on it. End up getting 3x what the system was worth when you sell the old one too.

Or alternatively, put it out of its misery with BIG SLEDGEHAMMER hur.

if he doesnt mind spending a little $, looking at least exchanging the mobo (just a personal selection here, GA-7ZX for $110) and a processor (Duron 600 - $60) and the RAM (check hot deals forum for 64/128 mb for cheap, ram is dropping outta the sky - kingston 128 mb pc133 at outpost for $70 after rebate), probably the case too (I doubt its ATX - enlight 7237 for $55 - some are cheaper) - but all this can be done for under $300. he can continue using the same hdd, cdrom, vid card, modem/nic, but remember that these will be bottlenecks.
