oh fellow AT VCG residents.......a problem has been found.

only the 5870 eyefinity 6 card will do more than 3 screens, I had read that adding a second 5870(1gb) would allow more screens but that is false. so I have a problem.

I can upgrade one card to a 5870 2gb eyefinity 6 card for 280.

then try and sell my spare 5870 for ~200 to recoup the expense.

or for about 260 I could get a 6950, and try and sell both, to add second 6950.

I have a single XFX 6950 in my other PC, but its running perfectly so I pretty much REFUSE to mess with it.

yeah I know one 6950 will do it, but I dont think it will get the FPS I am looking for for say, 2x1080p on BF3 :D

I could just get one card now and another later, but I hate the idea of mismatched cards because I have mental issues

Put a 5870 in your older machine (come on, you know it will work fine!), sell a 5870, and buy another 6950 for your new machine to use with your 6950. But are you sure dual 6950s will run 4+ monitors if the dual 5870s can't?

a single 6950 will run 4.

in xfire you cant drive any monitors off the second card, it just accelerates the primary.

supposedly I should have been able to run 4 w/o xfire enabled but CCC wont let me. then reenable to do eyefinity and game.

but since it wont let me, I am looking at other venues.

I have had a few random ati driver lockups, some screen tearing, and vertical line crashes that started middle of last week. its VERY random, half the time opening IE crashes the driver. I did a uninstall, driver sweep in safe mode, reinstall this weekend and it hasnt really helped.

I am beginning to wonder if one of the 5870's is bad, so I am probably going to remove one and test them separately this week. see if I can isolate the problem and get one RMA'd.
