Upgrade of XP SP2 destroyed my Hard Drive

Hi All,

I recently decided to upgrade from SP1 to Sp2, but having a remarkably slow internet connection I decided to just purchase a new version of XP bundled with SP1 and SP2 and just dynamically upgrade my version.
All was well after I put the CD into upgrade my current OS, but then an hour or so later after installation and the computer reboots, it won't boot up into windows but simply keeps restarting after doing the memory check!

I'm contemplating taking my HD out and backing up all the files to my friends computer and then formatting it to start off afresh.

Can anyone suggest an alternate method to recover my HD?

Thanks.
Ken

It sounds like something just happened to your system. Probably not related to the upgrade if it's rebooting during the POST. I would start to pull out cards, mem sticks, etc., one at a time to see if one of them is the culprit.

Agreed. If your system is rebooting immediately after checking the RAM, your problems are not Windows-related.

Agreed with above.^

The method I use:

Please disconnect the power before removing devices and ram.

1) pull all IDE and the floppy cables off motherboard. try it.
2)remove one stick of ram, if multiple sticks present. If not, change slot. try it.
3) try other stick of ram, if multiples. try it.
4)clear CMOS, following manufacturer's recommendations. try it.
5)Remove all cards but video, and try it.
6)If you have a pci vid card, pull your vid and put that in. It can be any old 1mb card as long as it works. try it.

If it does not work, you have either a bad processor, power supply, or motherboard. The odds of it being either the processor or power supply or processor are very small, using your description of the symptoms. The odds are high that it is the motherboard/BIOS.

I'm having a similar problem. I installed sp2 from the MS disk onto 3 other comps. When I got to the 4th one, as soon as the install was complete, it started rebooting and the only way I can get it to stop is with a run command in safe mode. Wondering if it has to do with the motherboard bios or the raid drivers. It's a MSI KT3 Ultra with the original bios, so it's probably pretty old by now. Tried a repair install and no go. Don't want to do a complete install, but it's getting down to that.

Try updating each of your device drivers from safe mode. Some older drivers may have compatibility problems with SP2.

I don't think this is what his saying is happening... I think he means windows doesn't fully come up (but lets let him clarify)

lol, bsobel, you interpreted my post correctly!

Sorry for the confusion guys, but my POST does boot fully and it gets to the stage where it says starting windows but reboots constantly upon getting to that stage and going to the "safe mode" options menu.

I have found a sort of solution thread for a certain LLKing who was having problems understanding some simple instructions made by the helpful SOY73NTGR££N, but I understand it pretty well.

I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Much appreciations for all the help so far.

LOL, now it makes sense! I was trying to run some ancient NT driver for an ancient ISA card in XP, and if i got it installed correctly, with the right IRQ, memory reservation, etc, it would loop reboot like that🙂
I was warned that XP was a real strech for that old stuff, but i tried it anyway. It works fine in win2k.

Also, you must make sure that you have no MALWARE or viruses on you system before you update to SP2, and then uninstall [yes uninstall] your firewalls and antivirus.
Reinstall the firewall and av after the successful update to SP2,

Yahoooo!
I'm back on, but I decided to reinstall my original XP cos I was just having way too many problems with the XP SP1+SP2 edition CD.
One other problem did occur though, whenever I installed something Microsoft, my Norton Antivirus 2005 would suddenly not work properly (ie. says that Norton does not support the "repair" function. or something along those lines) and I would need to reinstall my antivirus.

Strange...
