Hi.I am new to this forum and this is my first post. Please bear with me if there is something wrong.
I brought lenovo Y450 laptop(Core 2 Duo T6600, 2.2Ghz) 3 years ago and its working well. I'm glad i brought it.
Now i have decided to upgrade my processor. I do lot of animations and videos so processor performance really matters a lot to me.
Lenovo Y450 uses Intel® GM45 Express Chipset. I went to intel website and got some information about compatible processors. Link is given below.

Can i replace my processor with Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9100 or Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T9600. ?(Priority given to the first one.) The reason i prefer first one is it has quad cores. The issue here is can my laptop withstand the heat produced by Quad core processor. I use a good cooling pad so i don't think it is a issue. What is your suggestion ?
Please reply. Thanks in advance.

Damn, I clicked "no" but actually want to change it to "maybe" now. It depends on the BIOS of your laptop, and its cooling ability- you're going from a 35W to a 45W processor, you may wind up overheating the thing. It may be doable, though!

It would not be worthwhile I think. Its properly time to shop for a new laptop. Even a basic Pentium Bxxx will walk all over that T6600...

Another upgrade option would be an SSD. It really brings new life to older laptops. And should be cheaper as well.

Why wouldnt you want to do professional work on a desktop? Then load the end results onto the laptop and do any necessary presentations?

I can appreciate that you may prefer a laptop, but you'll get more performance per $$ on a desktop regardless if you are spending $500 or $5000.

Probably is better just to get a new laptop. As a general rule of thumb, any laptop with a socketed CPU can be upgraded to anything that is supported by the socket, up to the maximum performance level the OEM used in that particular product line. If Lenovo ever made a version with a Q9100 in it, then their latest BIOS will support it.

I've swapped out mobile CPU's many times, but I only do it if the upgrade is very cheap. The cost of a Q9100 is still well over $100 for a 2.26 GHz chip. The last one I did was an old Socket M Toshiba, replacing a 1.46 GHz Celeron with a 2 GHz C2D T7200 that cost $35. If the upgrade had cost $100, I wouldn't have bothered.
