Upgrade of Cable Modem

I'm thinking of upgrading my cable modem. Currently, I got a Linksys BEFCMU10. I'm thinking of going with a Motorola SurfBoard
SB6141. Although Comcast stated that they "increased" the speed in my area, Chicago, I always had a stable speed of 28Mbps, and my speed never drops below 15Mbps.
So, I'm wondering whether the modem upgrade will increase my speed significantly or just a few Mbps.

I use a Linksys WRT54GL router, btw.

What speeds to you pay for compared to what you get?

A quick google search shows that modem will max at 42mbps, the 6141 will go well past that. I recommend a router upgrade in the near future as well.

You will not get more speed over a linksys WRT54G router no matter [for the wireless] what you do to the modem, but the modem you have is an end of life device so if something ever happens you will need to get a new modem this includes cancel then resign up, move, or change the modem package, even to downgrade speeds. That device is no longer supported and once it needs re-provisioning the cmts will refuse to support it. Whether you NEEd to upgrade depends on what speed you currently subscribe to. if you are on the 12Mb package you are fine, if you are on the 20 or 25 mb packages its not Necessary but you may see some small benefit on powerboost speeds, if you are onb higher than 25 Mb/s you need a new modem to support them.

I have the Motorola Surfboard SB6141. It made a difference for me. They have an Intel SoC onboard that won't delay anything. As suggested, get a good router like a MikroTik or something.

I think your modem is end-of-life according to comcast
http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/mydev.php?tier=-1&h=0&d2=0&d3=0&s=&so=1&e=1&sc=0
Not sure which version you have

Also read this on end of life devices on comcast
http://customer.comcast.com/help-and-support/internet/end-of-life-devices/
End-of-Life basically means we will no longer install the device, either as a new or replacement device. In addition, it means we no longer recommend that customers purchase these devices, whether new or used. It is also an advance warning that the device will soon need to be replaced.

Typically, if a device is identified as End-of-Life, it will subsequently move to End-of-Support (EOS) status. This means that when a device reaches End-of-Support status, it will no longer work on our network or be compatible with our network and/or services.

So you will need to buy a modem sooner or later.

If you want to buy a SB6141 look at post 6 on here
