Upgrade now to PCI-e or stay with AGP

I am building a system for a friend of mine and am stuck between a PCI-e mobo or an AGP mobo. He wants the computer to last a while and then upgrade it down the road. The main concern I have is if in the future AGP will no longer exist and then he would have to buy a whole new motherboard just to upgrade a videocard.

Also, what is a better performing card, a 9800 PRO or a 6600 GT OC? From what I have read the 600 GT is faster.

6600GT will be faster. If you're building now, then go PCIe. Especially if you're using a 6600GT because the PCIe versions are cheaper.

Yeah, PCI-e is the best choice now. It would probably end up being the sam price. The boards are about the same and the card tend to be a bit cheaper (at least the 6600gts).

Go with the 6600GT/PCI-E setup!

The 6600GT is faster than the 9800Pro, and costs about the same. AGP/PCI-E MoBo's cost virtually the same price now.

With the current sales on at NCIX, it would cost me about an extra $60 to get the 6600GT and the PCI-e motherboard. Despite that, I am leaning towards the more expensive and future proof choice.

I would spend the extra $60 to future proof the machine. Had I waited 6 months I would have gone with PCI-e, but as it stands I'll incorporate it in the next major upgrade, which will probably come down the pipe in 3 years.
