Upgrade Now or Wait?

I recently upgraded to SB, and have been holding onto my 4890 CF setup. Anyone have an opinion on whether I should upgrade now, or hold out until around the BF3 release date to upgrade? The most strenuous game I play is BC2 at the moment. I toyed with ARMA2 as well, but that game is too much work to have fun in. Seems to me that these cards still have a decent amount of horsepower.

See sig for details on the machine. I'm thinking a budget roughly around $2-350 and want to move to a single card.

Edit: I have since bought an SSD.

You can wait and wait and wait.

A top end card will out perform your 4870's.

Go balls out and buy a GTX 580 :)

If the point of upgrading for for better performance in BF3, then wait until the game is actually released. And yes, by that time, there is a good chance that new cards will be out.

I'm rockin' 4890 CF as well. If I had to take the plunge today I would go with a 6950 2GB model.

But personally, I would wait for 7xxx series or gtx 6xx series.

By the time BF3 is out there is a good chance one or both can be out.

ISay wait, by the time BF3 is out prices should've droped on today high-end cards, if you are now satisfied with BF2 performance then why waste money on upgrading. Iwas toying with the idea of getting another 5870 in CF but games that Iplay just dont require that much horse power. so im holding my next GPU upgrade till BF3/MassEffect3 are released.

Your 4890 Crossfire setup is equal to the best single gpu cards out atm. Perhaps 5-10% from a 580 or a 6970 in high res situations.

Id wait, no reason at all to upgrade atm if you are packing that good hardware.

OP, you have a 23" widescreen monitor, so I'm guessing you game at 1920x1080? I don't see any point upgrading now unless you plan on upgrading your monitor as well.

Definately wait. But if you break down then make sure to bump your budget and go for a 580 or 6970x2.

Thanks for everyone's input. I'm going to hold off for now. Might grab an SSD to ease the upgrade bug.

SSD is a good idea. Any decent ssd u pick up today will be good for many years and be a massive upgrade over mechanical hdd, and the new ones ssds that will come out after that likely won't have much improvements that will actually be noticeable in real world uses.

Wait until the game comes out.

a) read reviews make sure it's any good (EA is all about marketing and selling the game prior to release.....in most cases they fall flat on their face when it comes out). I have high hopes for BF3, but I also had high hopes for Crysis 2 and Medal of Honor...

b) see benchmarks for GPU for specific games > decide/buy

Chances are you might not even get the game...

By next generation release because of the 40nm -> 28nm jump is so big, performance is bound to jump ~60% or more for the topend.

If you spend a small fortune now, get a 580,... you ll be curseing yourself when the next gen comes out, and a mid range card thats much cheaper is faster than the 580 you bought for a fortune, and it uses less power to give same or better performance.


I think its so close now (next gen releases), that you should wait for next gen.

I'm going to bump this thread because I have since bought an SSD, and I'm simply not satisfied with the performance I'm seeing in well... RO2 and BF3 (beta). Obviously a lot of that has to do with optimization of the two games not being what they will be...

Does anyone know when the next gen cards are supposed to be coming out? Arghhh!

Q4 but most likely Q1 2012

SSD doesn't make sense to me, it only improves loading times....which I really don't mind waiting extra 5-10...even 20 seconds for. Whatever.

Can't justify paying $1 per GB for seconds.

If I was working and being productive it would be a different story.

PS. Red Orchestra 2 is a great game, BF3 is a disappointment (especially graphics wise, nothing like the videos)

I think it's safe to say that whatever settings he chooses and even if his budget can allow 2x 580s in SLI.....it will never look like the videos EA have been feeding us all this time.

So what does it matter?

Why is that? Because the Beta is the final product and there will never be any improvements on it?

You've got less than 1 month before BF3 even comes out. I won't need to upgrade for Rage so I'm going to wait 1 more month before I do anything.

I'd say keep your HD 4890's unless you need DX11 (or are bothered by high temp/power consumption of CF setup.) Your cards still have much life in them.

SSDs are one of these upgrades that you never truly appreciate until you actually try them.
