I have been pretty happy with my system up to this morning when it stopped working. I've gone through all of the steps and I'm at acceptance now. The board is dead (P5Q-E). I have an RMA setup with ASUS, which is pretty nice, so i'll have a replacement in a week, but i've been planning to upgrade sometime this year anyway....so...should i just bite the bullet now?

Option A: Wait for the new mobo, and rebuild back to status quo in a week at zero cost. The system runs fine, and i'm ok with it. Wait for ??? better motherboards? Better chips? later in the year? and upgrade then...

Option B: Just got to Microcenter and buy the i7 2600K and be done with it. If I do this, I'll get an i7 2600K, Asus P8P67 Deluxe, and 8GB memory. I have a 750Watt PSU, and a GTX 260, but I think I'll be good without needing a new PSU. Cost...$239+$279+$??$ ram and I'm done.

thoughts?

If you want the upgrade by all means do so. Bulldozer is still a few months out as is socket 2011. Only thing maybe worth waiting for between now and then is a new 2600K stepping and the Z68 chipset.

I'm waiting to see what AMD will bring. Either it will be better than what they have now but still cheap to compete or be better and cause intel to drop their prices.

Either way its win win for those that can wait. :)

Could you maybe drop in a used C2Q for cheap?

TBH I don't find the CPU market all that exciting right now, unless of course you're willing to spend $200 on a CPU and close to $200 on a motherboard.

Option A, wait for Z68.

Or option B, but no need to go with Deluxe unless it has something you really really need that's not on the regular or pro model. Personally I'm not convinced the 2600K is worth it compared to the 2500K, about 100$ for Hyperthreading? Seems a lot for not much...

Also, at the moment Asus mobo's can only control pwm fans on the cpu fan header. Speedfan doesn't work yet (although it's not clear why, maybe Speedfan needs updating or maybe Asus bios needs updating or maybe it will never be possible).

Well, the only thing really on the horizon is bulldozer, and that's going to be in late spring or early summer.

If your system is satisfactory, I'd just wait. What are you doing with your system these days? A 2500k would be a nice step up, but you'd also need a newer GPU to really max it out.

There's a new 2600K stepping? Wow can't wait to see how much higher it'll go.
