"upgrade" notebook (presario 1626) with K6-III+?

Hello,

I just inherited a 1626 (K6, 266MHz) and was wondering if anyone has experience with "upgrading" such beasties to K6-III+. Sanrda identifies the CPU as K6 (Littlefoot) 233-300 2.2V.

I would rather not take it apart unless I have good reason to expect the CPU to be in a socket-7. Did AMD ever made K6 in a non-socket-7 form, e.g., surface mounted for notebooks?

What would the voltage of the processor in such a notebook be?

If the K6 is socketed, and the voltage is below 2.2V, then can the software multipliers set the chip to, say 66X6=400MHz instead of the 66X4=266 currently running?

can't tell you for certain but your plan is unlikely to work as most likely the cpu is soldered to the motherboard.
a more enlighten person may give you a more definite answer.

Ach, take it apart and see! though it is unlikely, I have dismantled several notebooks and the processors r allways soldered in. If you use common sence and remember where the skrews go u shouldnt have 2 much trouble though it is VERY easy to break stuf inside a notebook(its not designd to be taken apart:)so be gentle!!

Good luck!

I upgraded my Compaq 1247 (K62-400) to a K6-3+ 450 @ 550 Mhz, Socket 7 and the board has dip switches for FSB, Multiplier and voltage down to 1.8. I was surprized at the settings available on this board, The performance increase was like day and night, the best $50.00 upgrade I ever did. (all the setting were etched on the board in different spots.)

P.S. a side benefit is the battery lasts longer due to the lower current draw of the k6-3.

I opened the Presario as per instructions on Compaq's site. I ended up disassembling much too much, and after putting everything back and it is working, I have a screw left outside :disgust:

The CPU is socketed in a ZIF socket which slides sideways to remove. Too late, I found the meaning of the switches on the web site and not on the (completely disassembled) motherboard.
There are switches for multiplier, so X6 (==X2) is possible. The FSB can be either 60 or 66 MHz:( I could go from 266MHz to 400MHz. The current 2.1V should be OK for the K6-III+. The other option per the Compaq info (only 3 out of 6 are described) is 2.4V (and the way the switches are set now reads as 1.2V!) Does anyone know what the significance of "power good" voltage is? Is there a special purpose voltage for something? The only "power good" I am aware of is a wire on the power supply which indicates that power is stable, but that should not go to the CPU.

Anyone have an opinion on how the K6-III+ would do with a BIOS which only knows the K6? I do want to use Win2K, so I am limited in the tweak utilities I could use.
