Upgrade my Computer

Tonight I was updating my bios and I fried it by accident. I've had the upgrade bug for a while, but I was holding off for the dual core A64s. Now that I need a mobo, I'm thinking of upgrading now instead of waiting. If I do get a A64 now, then I'll have to wait for dual core when it comes out because I can't afford to upgrade more than once every 2 years

Here's what I have:
Athlon XP 1600+
GeForce 3 Ti450 Golden Sample Overclock (AGP)
1x 512MB Mushkin PC3200 CL2 Blue
2x 256MB Kingston Valueram PC2100 CL2.5

So I have several Options:

1. $44: KT600 mobo Text

2. $107 DFI lanparty UT NF3 250GbHere
and $219 A64 3400+ Newcastle 2.4GHz
Total: $326

3. $150 3000+ Winchester
$140 DFI NF4 Ultra D
$180 Geforce 6600GT PCIe
Total: $470

4. Opteron?

5. Wait for Venice (I have a laptop to get me by for now)

6. Wait for Dual Core (That's kinda pushin it. I miss my desktop)

7. Other: Please suggest

I dunno what to do. Help me pick!

I think dual core is going to be expensive when it comes out... right?

If you weren't having any performance problems before (like wanting to play a game that you couldn't), just get a cheapo socket A board for now.

Well, I do have the upgrade bug, but I can play everything I want to at 640x480. I've played Doom3 and HL2 with no major problems, but it'd be nice to have that insane framerate/resolution that everyone else has.

Are you planning on overclocking if you get a new system?

If it will overclock and stay 100% stable, then yes. If it's not 100% stable when overclocked, then no.

I ask because you've picked out some overclocking boards 🙂. I'm not a big OC fan.

If you don't want to, you can save some cash going with a board that's not so overclocking friendly and doesn't come with a bunch of features you might not end up using.

The price on that 3400+ has been very nice for a while now. I'd probably go with that for myself if I was getting a new system.

Maybe:

3400+
basic motherboard
6600gt

Comes to $479 before shipping.
I'd rather have that than the 3000+ 939 PCIe

I'm sure you could get a socket A motherboard from somebody on FS/FT for like $25 shipped too. With tons of people getting A64 systems I'm sure there are dozens over there right now with your name on it.

its never a "good" time to upgrade your system because there is always new stuff coming out- in your case to save money i'd stay a generation behind. depending on your budget i'd get this if i were you in this order:
1. Abit NF7 Motherboard (ditch that pc2100 it'll only hold you back) around 70 bucks now probably
2. see if you can get a 6600 for around 120 that'll be good
3. get used xp maybe if u can find a good deal on a 2500+ barton

#2 gives you the best bang for the $$. That DFI board OC's extremely well.

But if you're going to buy a VC anyway, I would go S939 PCI-e.

No there ARE times when it's a good idea to upgrade, like when you buying something mid beginning of hardware cycle (Intel BX chipsets). You don't want to get the very beginning because of the fact of problems that have not be resolved yet and you don't want to go too late otherwise you won't be able to upgrade agian. Upgrading right now is not a good idea because of the fact dual core is very close around the corner so definately don't expect to upgrade to a faster processor down the road because your board won't support dual core.

Replacing the BIOS chip will buy you time to read reviews and think over your needs.
>> Bad Flash dot Com <<

Soltek K8T890 mobo and a 3000 or 3200+ A64 with a PCI-X video card.

Or if you wanted to save more money, just get the Soltek K8T800-939 (agp), keep your current vid card for a while, and get a 3000 or 3200+.

Booooooooooooooo!

My motherboard died tonight. Now I'm in the same boat as you.

I'll probably end up getting a 3400+ on a cheapo socket 754 and keep my 9800pro.

What a coincidence! What kind of board did you have? I'm still not sure what I'm going to do yet. I saw some Venice overclocking and it looked pretty sweet.

I'm thinking I will either go with:

1. 3400+ and Lanparty NF3
or
2. Venice 3000+ and Epox 9NDA3J
