Well I'm feeling pretty stuck right now. I want to get an NVIDIA 7800GT card, but they're only coming PCIE. I don't know why, but whatever. So I was googling and apparently there ARE socket 754 motherboards PCIE compatible. Now right now I have an ASUS K8V Deluxe, Socket 754 3200+ Clawhammer from 2003 right after it was released. I don't have the ability to buy a new CPU and I shouldn't need to (yet) anyway, but I really don't want to be stuck with last generation video card technology.
There are PCIE to AGP converters, but not vice versa! This is so frustrating..
But anyway, is this really viable? Buying a new mobo and nothing but? I should mention that I wasn't the one to actually install my CPU last time, and I don't know how well they are at changing boards if this is even possible. Besides, I guess this would bump up my graphics update cost even further...
Though right now there are no good NVIDIA cards out when you compare them to the $310 X850XTPE when talking AGP. AGP is the downfall to everything, but I don't want to go ATI because they don't and probably never will have digital vibrance, a feature that increases color saturation in a nonlinear manner so as to liven up average desktop displays and wallpapers without looking overdone 90% of the time. I love the feature, ATI doesn't care about the feature or matching it...
I'm a NVIDIA guy stuck in a hard position. It's just not worth saving $10 to get a 6800GT when I could get an X850XTPE, but that's ATI...
Though the 7800GT would clearly be the choice I would make, I just don't know how viable anything is when talking such a direct purposed upgrade.
I currently have a 5900NU which can hardly play HL2 and has had an absolute SLEW of problems with LCDs when using the DVI port. XFX tech support also sucks, I have learned...
