I currently have a ASUS A8V Deluxe Rev.(2) mob, X2 4200 cpu and 2 gb ram. I mainly run AUTOCAD and OFFICE aplications. I have a few bucks for amd upgrade and was wondering if going to the X2 4800 would give me any performance increase? Or would it be a waste of money? Also, I'm interested in a Lap Top. If I have a $3000.00 budget what would the ultimate Lap top be to purchase for that?

If you overclock, you can boost speed on your 4200 quite a bit and eliminate the need for a faster CPU. You have 2 GB RAM, so you're fine there also.

As far as the laptop goes, what are you interested in? Ultimate portability? Big screen? Uber-Powerful SLi graphics? Tell us your needs and we'll think of something for you :)

If you're going to pay $3000, might as well go directly to Dell's site and configure a custom XPS, and also look at Alienware and other specialty makes if you want to spend $3000

Made a quick visit to Alienware's site. If you feel like blowing $3000 for the ultimate gaming laptop you can get an Aurora M9700 with a Turion MT-40, 2 GB RAM, 100GB HDD, and SLi'd 7900GS graphics for a bit less than $3000.

Or you can go to Dell and get a loaded XPS M 1710 with 2 GHz Core Duo, 2 GB RAM, 100GB HDD, and 512mb nVidia 7900GTX go for around the same price. Lot of money, yes, but better deal than that XPS from Costco.

I don't really think it's worth it to blow that much cash on a laptop that's going to be big, heavy, and hot, but if you have $3000 laying around and this is how you want to spend it, go right ahead. You'll be buying some of the most powerful parts available in a laptop.

AMD x2 4200+ is really good already, i just got one and it overclocked to 2.6ghz easily with low temperatures... 32C IDLE, 39C Load.

$3000!? Go look at some Alienwares :)
