Upgrade help please

I'm an old guy at 55 and wanting to upgrade to be able to play Doom. My computer is old and I have been out of the loop for years. Here's my specs

case--- Cooler Master HAF 932

Processor--- Intel Core I7 920 2.66ghz

Motherboard---EVGA x58 Le sli

System memory---6gb ddr3 1600mhz

Powersupply---100w Corsair

Harddrive---1.5tb Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm 32mb cache sata

Video cards---2x crossfireati Radeon 5870

This is a Digital Storm system that was pretty good back in the day. I'm not looking to break the bank but would like it to be a decent system if I can change out a few things. I know the video cards have to go and I'm guessing more ram and maybe a ssd? I'm looking forward to your answers.

The only thing on your system I really question is your CPU (it's an i7, but an old i7). See if you can run a checker on one of the multiple sites that offer them and see what they say. Here is an example:

If the CPU meets the requirements, pick up the best AMD/Nvidia card that is about to come out (aka, they aren't on the shelves yet), some more RAM (you'll need at least 8 GB) and you should be good to go.

I think I will go ahead and replace the cpu,video card,and add ram.
I'd like to stay around &1000 or so.
Any recomendations on these parts?

You will find many build help posts in the'General Hardware' section. It might help you if you read through a few of them, and a moderator Ken g6 actually has a $1000 build he just added in that section as well.

If you want to upgrade CPU and motherboard (and stay Intel), you will need all new RAM.

The only change I would make is wait a couple weeks (June 10) and get a GTX 1070 for the same price at the one Ken g6 mentioned ($379) in his build.

Is your budget the same? Just make sure you can afford the CPU in the recommended build for that game, or wait and do a build when you can.

Sure, that can happen, lol. Just remember that your rig is probably coming up on 8 years old. So don't worry too much about getting the cheapest thing you can find. You are going to get your money out if it. Find the features you want, then narrow it down by user feedback. And get an i7. The submodel won't make too much of a difference 8 years down the road. But the extra features (cache/cores) will. And just in case there is a queation, get a new PSU for this build.

Ok so I guess I'm going to go ahead and spend a little more. I'm thinking my P.s.u. at 1000w should be ok. I guess I'll grab a motherboard and new ram also. It will have to last me while. The asus pro mb looks pretty good. 16 Meg's of ram (any certain brand?) Would a 6 core cpu be better? And of course a video card. I really appreciate all of the hand holding.

Ram is ram, not much of a difference. The DDR4 2666 listed in the the $1000 build guide is fine. If you can get DDR4 3000 for the same price, go with it. Really just not much of a real-world difference to go higher than that. (post #4).

Go with the card when it is released (June 10) that Ketchup recommended (GTX 1070 post #5).

Asus makes good motherboards, or you could also go with the Asrock in the $1000 build guide.

6 core CPUs are better for professional use (heavy video\image editing). For gaming, that are the same as, or even slightly lower in some cases, mainstream CPUs (i7-6700 or i5-6600). If you want to overclock, make sure you choose a z170 motherboard and a i7-6700k or i5-6600k). You'll also need a CPU cooler for those 'K' CPUs.
