Upgrade from xp to 7 question

I want to upgrade from xp to win 7 but is there a way to upgrade but keep all your programs installed? I'm pretty sure with the 98 to xp upgrade it basically was no different that a regular reformat/reinstall.

It is a long way around, but you could upgrade XP to Vista, then after it is up and running, go from Vista to 7.

he would end up with the computer version of a Turducken! 😉

There are also "migration" programs that may (or may not) help with this. Try the major disk utilities vendors like Acronis, Paragon, O&), etc.

Yes, you can install Windows 7 without un-installing your programs. I think an option to format your hard disk is available when you are doing custom installation.
If you booting your computer using the Windows 7 installation disc or with a USB flash drive, then formatting isn't required.

But i don't prefer it, You should format your all programs because here chances are more that your current programs don't support Windows 7 and it requires re-installation.
Then it will be complexing for you so, better you format it.

Don't
It may take longer to re-install the programs but I promise you will be glad you did. Doing an upgrade install is always problematic and xp to 7 is really really problematic, especially if you went to x64.

there is No way to go around keeping the installed program functioning from Win XP to Win 7.

The old Windows is stored in a file windows.old, and data and portable programs can be copied and might work but otherwise applications need to be reinstalled.
