If you could upgrade from an x800xt to a (new) 7900 GS for $66 after taxes, would you do it?

Let's suppose that I could sell the x800xt locally for $40 (speculation).

Should I consider doing that and cancel my MSI 8800 GT order with Dell? I'm fairly happy with my x800xt other than not being able to see grid lines in the UT3 Editor.

Well...

Kinda depends on what the rest of your system looks like. If you have enough cpu to push that 8800GT from Dell you have on backorder, that would be a far superior card with much better staying power than the 7900gs.

You may be "fairly happy" with your x800xt but you may just not know what you are missing in newer games (x800 series doesn't even support SM3.0 IIRC so there are a LOT of effects you aren't even seeing). The 7900gs will remedy some of this for ~1-2 year old games and the 8800gt will bring you completely up to date.

--EDIT

@JOJO: BB has a PNY 7900gs on sale for $45.99 if you are lucky enough to find it on the shelves.

Yes. 7900GS will be a good boost from X800XT. I went from X850 GTO^2 (roughly same) to 7900GS and it was noticable boost in performance. Hell 7900GS can play ET:QW and COD4 at 1680x1050 in medium graphics for me.

Prices vary from store to store. It's a YMMV sort of thimg.

Thanks for the advice guys; I'm thinking it over. To me it doesn't seem like a worthwhile upgrade until taking overclocking headroom and the possibility of being able to sell the x800 GTO/xt into account.
