Looking to upgrade a HD 5850.

GTX 950 - $110
GTX 960 - $160
GTX 970 - $255

Which card do i need for high-extreme settings @ FHD?

Thanks

Are you looking for 1080P or something higher?

Any of those will be a boost but if you're going to do it I would say either GTX 970 or see what AMD has with their new 480's. Would be good for 1080P at max settings in most, if not all, games.

The used market is flush with higher end cards now so if you go that route you can probably get some good deals.

Looking for max settings at 1080p. The 950/960 can't handle that?

Looks like 950/960 is 2.5x a 5850 and 970 is 4x a 5850.

The RX 480 looks very interesting, I would def wait on it. It is possible the 970 will run cooler, but for the most part it looks like the RX 480 plays in the 980gtx sand box, and for $199 that is amazing. Also I see spec sheets saying it is 14nm putting it smaller than nvidia, which puts it in the hard to belive category. 🙂

So the RX 480 is a little disappointing due to overly high expectations but it is still the best card you can get in this price range, at least until prices shift in response to the new cards. I'm guessing the 480 is ballpark around as good as a GTX 970 depending on the exact game and DX version you are talking about. Good luck finding a 480 in stock at a reasonable price in the short term.

The GTX 950 is a bit light for "high-extreme settings @ FHD" and the 960 doesn't have much more grunt than the 950 so IMO neither meet your stated goal.

The GTX 970 would get the job done as would the RX 480. The 480 looks especially strong in DX12 titles.

I think it is worth waiting a bit longer to find a RX 480 in stock or maybe even a bit longer to see what nVidia's lower priced 14-16nm offerings look like. A GTX 1060 might be just the thing you need. July 7th is said to bring news of the 1060...

Sounds good, thanks for all the info. I'll keep an eye out for the RX 480.

Yeah, the 480 is, right at this moment, the best possible upgrade for you. I'd recommend, if you can wait, for an AIB 480.

Though if you can get a 480 4gb reference for $200 and don't care about OC then get that and be happy you got the best price/performance card out there. It's a bit weak in performance/watt, but it won't run any hotter than the 5850 you have now.

Oh, and it'll be way faster.

Yea so the 480 is scoring squarely with the 970. For the most part your FHD experience will be great with a great cpu, I find I need to lay off the AA but that's about it. It is also what valve is targeting as the minimum for good VR. However if you want to spend more money, you can get faster.

Also there may be some power use issues with the RX 480. Current test release boards are drawing more power from the motherboard than it should. No idea when ati will let this blow up but the "fix" will simply be drivers that lower the power setting which will result in lower performances.
