Upgrade from FX 55 to Opt 185 won't Boot to Windows

I just got my new Opteron 185 a couple days ago and attempted to upgrade my system from my current FX55. Before I swapped out the hardware I flashed to the latest BIOS for my DFI Lanparty Ultra-D.

After installing the new cpu, it booted up fine and went into windows and I was then prompted that new hardware was found and installed and I needed to reboot for it to take affect. That was the last I saw of windows.

I originally left my settings like they were for my FX, 11x 250, but then tried many settings including recommended BIOS settings load.

I would appreciate any and all help in finding a solution to just boot into windows. Thanks in advance.

It just keeps going to the "Windows failed, boot to safe mode" message everytime. I'd rather not have to do a clean install, I didn't think you had to, but maybe I was lucky enough to get some sort of corruption.

I've tried several bios options, but I'm new to dual core so I'm not sure if my settings are overkill or not. I've gone from bare necessity numbers to my original FX overclock numbers.

If you are wondering if the flash worked with the old cpu, it did. Are you saying to swap back to just see if it's a windows corruption or just the cpu settings?

Would the new install for the dual core not affect going back to single?

By the way, it did boot up to windows on the first try...before it did the "upgrade" and asked to reboot. I'm not sure what settings it uses to do such a thing, but I left bios alone after windows did its thing and it failed ever since. So it does sound like something went bad with the OS.

I think I would rather do a clean install than have to swap out cpu's 2 more times. I am water cooling by the way, not as easy to swap things out:)

You just need to reinstall Windows; you don't have to remove the Opteron to do it, though.

You could also try a repair install. Boot from the Windows CD and wait until you are notified that the install has found a previous install of XP. It will ask if you want to attempt to repair it. Hit YES ( I think it is actually "R") and then see if this will resolve it without a complete clean install. If not, format and start over.

personally for me, i'd rather take the cpu out then reinstall windows.

guess you must have a big pain in the butt watercooling mounting kit. mine requires me to remove 4 screws and then remove the waterblock.

Well, I tried to repair windows with no luck. I ended up just formatting and reinstalling. What a huge headache to upgrade a cpu. I lost a lot of stuff because I use raid 0 so I couldn't just yank the hard drive and retrieve the data (that I'm aware of). Guess I should have backed up my hard drive first.

Anyway, I'm up and running and with not a lot of hair nor sleep. I hope no one else has to go through this.

Shimmishim, I'm water cooling two raptor hard drives, gfx card, cpu...so I have a lot of hoses and I've had issues with leaks in the past. So, I'd rather lose my data and reinstall windows:)

Thanks for everyone's help.

That is odd, I upgraded a lot of 3200+ and 3200+ singles to Opterons 180 and 185, and every one went without a hitch, never had any Windows problems, They were all XP Home
