Upgrade from eVGA 7900GT (OC'ed) to 8600GTS...Worth it ?

Hi guys...Recently I have come to think that I need to move to directX 10, since more and more games are popping up now using it...and also I dont want to spend too much money in the move...

I currently have an eVGA 7900GT (Factory overclocked), and I am think of moving to a 8600GTS card...Is it a good move ?

Mid-range cards of new generation are typically smaller/cooler/quieter than the previous generation's high-end, with lower power requirements and a better array of feature, but they're rarely significantly faster (those that were have become legendary). The 8600GTS isn't unusual, so for gaming stick to your 7900GT and Dx9: the 8600GTS is slower and Dx10 features make things even slower with little image improvement.

yep, he's right. some of those rare occasions were the 6600GT/7600GT.

i would stick around with your 7900GT. i have one and overclocked it. its definitely a powerful card for the price. if you really want an upgrade, see the upcoming 8800GT. that looks to be a winner from what i read/hear.

Anandtech's Unreal Tournament 2007 review finally shows a 8600 card looking good compared to the last generation, but that may be an outlier.

Waiting the short time for the 8800GT is almost certainly the right move.

I am in EXACTLY the same boat... and I am waiting for the 8800GT because anything short of an 8800 is a downgrade from my evga 7900 OC.
You will have unplayable framerates in DX10 and will have to stick to DX9, where your performance will be LOWER then your current card...

Since the 8800 are abit to expensive for me right now, I am waiting for the G92 chips to arrive and see if I could find a worthwhile upgrade then...

Wouldn't be an update, more of a "sidegrade" - perform slightly better in certain shader heavy/DX10 games (Oblivion) - worse in others (ie. Source engine, Doom3 engine).

I'd wait for the 8800 GT which should be lower power consuming and worthwhile performance increase.

hey thanx for all the input guys...8600 GTS is out of my books then...

I will try to get an 8800GT now hopefully 😀....
