Upgrade from Dual Core to Dual Core

I have an Opty 165 and Monarch now has the X2 4600+ for a mere $260. Most people are upgrading from single core processors with the new price cuts (which is a no brainer), but how about dual core to dual core +600mhz?

i would stick with your opteron...worth more money and im sure it'll overclock like mad. not worth to spend more money on a faster dual-core since you already have one.

True. My 165 oc to 2.5 which is better than the 4600+ at 2.4 default. You also have 1M each of L2 cache. Keep it.

If you don't OC, it is also a no brainer to dump it. That 600 mhz is a big jump in the A64 world.

True, but who in their right mind bought an opteron 165 for a home computer not to OC it.


One thing to remember OP. Opteron 165 has a bigger cache than a 4600+. So at the same speed a 165 will be faster. Also keep in mind, theres no guarantee your 4600+ will hit a better OC than a 165, so you might be gambling on a slow down. If your 165 is stable at a decent OC, stick with it.

Well my MB (MSI 6150) doesn't have v.core adjustments.

I was thinking I could also go the route of upgrading my ram to DDR500 and just jack up the FSB to 250mhz. But is an Opty pretty much guaranteed to hit 2200mhz at stock voltage?

You won't need vcore adjustments to overclock. That 165 should be good for 2.4 on stock volts pretty easily.

Or, you could sell it and get the 4600+. That is clearly still the easiest solution 🙂

I took your advice and those in the MSI K8NGM2 motherboard thread. I cranked up the FSB to 250mhz and gained about 1000 pts in 3dmark. Feel like I just got a free upgrade 🙂.

I did the same thing to my 4800+. I upped my HTT to 250 and dropped my mult to 10x and I get 2.5GHz at stock Vcore. It's only a 100MHz increase, but anything sensitive to memory bandwidth showed a nice improvement.
