Hello

I would like to upgrade the CPU on my system
I would like to buy an intel core i7 980 or intel core i7 980x

I use this computer for graphic design.
I don't want to buy a new pc so i thought i could upgrade the cpu only.

The specs of my system

intel core i7 920 bloomfield Revision C0/C1
asus P6T SE Rev 1.xx
corsair dominator 6Gb Triple Channel DD3 1600 TR3X6G1600C8D
kingston hyperX 12Gb Triple Channel DD3 1600 khx1600c9d3/4gx

There's the CPU support chart for your motherboard, it looks like both the 980 and 980X chips are fine. I would update your BIOS to the latest revision before switching chips just to make sure everything goes properly.

But, one question - either of these CPUs are going to be quite expensive. You could probably get a newer generation motherboard & cpu for the same as you will give for one of these older chips. Might be worth checking prices before you buy.

Also, if you don't have one already, I highly recommend getting an SSD for your system, that will really make everything feel faster/more responsive.

I bought an X5650, will receive next week.
Upgrading from an i7 920.

I'm hoping to oc this 'new' x5650 to 3.8ghz. And get better multi thread then a 4790k.

Thanx for your answers

I've also sent a message to asus and waiting for response about the compatibility of the motherboard with the xeon processor that you mentioned.

this is the cpu support for my mobo from asus
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P6T_SE/HelpDesk_CPU/
the xeon processors are not listed

Are you sure that a xeon processor is compatible with this motherboard?
I could buy a used one for around 100$ just to check if it is compatible.

Should I buy a Malay or Costa Rica ?

Yes.. The Xeons work & overclock well with your board. You'll love the upgrade for what you're doing.. :)

"A must have for anyone with a compatible x58 system! This 6 core Xeon was a great upgrade for my aging x58 system (replaced a i7 920). Currently running it at a 4.3 Ghz overclock ;)"

"Performance and Value unequalled. Simply an unbelievable value for such tremendous performance. For $70 I now have a cpu which overclocks to 4.4Ghz and will out perform a 4770K in most benchmarks.
