I was wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade from a Athlon 1.4 (266mhz) to something like a XP1880+ for more performance and cooler temps? Here the specs: ASUS A7M266, Thermaltake Volcano 6cu on the 1.4, 512mb Crucial PC2100, GF3 TI500, etc. This is my backup machine and the performance is ok, but the temps are higher than I'd like (high 50s to low 60s) so I was thinking about grabbing a Palomino core XP chip in hopes of lower temps and a little bit more performance. Would I see much difference? BTW, according to what I've read I can only go with a Palomino core which limits me to 2100+. Thanks!

What's the problem with higher CPU temp? It is designed to support up to 90°C, so you have a good margin before its death :)

Although, if you want to lower the temp you must take a Thoroughbred (I think your motherboard support it).

If all you have is a T-Bird, why does it matter if you have high temps? The worst it'll do to it is fry the chip, in which case you could upgrade then. The 1800+ will give you about the same temps/perf. I wouldn't spend the cash personally. I have a T-bird at 1.47 and want to upgrade as well. Just get a 2400+ if you want more perf for cheap. Otherwise go all out and get a 2400+ mobile(barton) and OC it.

I had a 1.3 T-bird that was to slow for me, and so went with a Thoroughbred 1800+. Wonderful is all I can say.
